but any more than four-five icons is too much for me, personally. I only have four right now (Mister X/Random/Oblivion/Harbette (.rtf for a krazuman game)). Just like my actual, physical desktop!
i used to not be able to handle more than a few myself, though it's evolved to two columns out of necessity (if i try that thing where you put all your icons in a folder to conserve space, i end up never opening up the folder anyway)
the windows 7 taskbar helps ease my pain a little, since i can have everyday stuff like firefox and RMVX always right there

I personally just use my desktop for my current games, Mister X, Random folder (where I put pretty much everything image-related that's not my actual art, and miscellaneous/old documents) and the current main document for Krazuman game dev.
I suppose that I just like things to be very neat and organized! The innards are messy though, like most of my Random folder and laundry bin full of unfolded clothes. My notes for class are organized, but smothered in doodles of hot men posing and women with guns/Aeon Flux. THE SECRET LIFE OF CRAZE MCCRAZE

which i guess is pretty similar to the start menu
speaking of the start menu, i use it to open notepad but not for anything else (similarly, i only use the address bar in firefox to go to facebook; every other site i normally visit is a bookmark)
typing all this stuff out makes me feel like i sound crazy
also: Aeon Flux is hecka sweet (well, the animated series is)

Decided to clean out a lot of unused junk programs and processes when the new monitor came.
