yeah funnily enough the people saying 'welp Islam is moving on with the world' don't really get the coverage. this was the overriding viewpoint of many of the muslims I met in college!

I haven't really been paying attention to this movement, but it strikes me as deeply stupid. It has become fashionable to make fun of Islam without realizing that there are reasonable people of Muslim faith who don't oppress women and don't want to murder Americans.

That said, an Islam cleric blaming Earthquakes on immodest dress is the height of religious delusion.

But never mind that, the far more interesting implications of this event are that apparently women have superpowers.

The modest dressing of both men and women is a core muslim belief, yes, but you don't need clerics decrying the wearing of speedos by overly hairy Arabic men as the cause for earthquakes, do you?

Also the idea that "dressing modestly" and "dressing as modestly as a cleric deems" are two completely different things. Many clerics believe showing ankle IS dressing immodestly, as is showing hair and showing mouths and showing eyes and showing EVERYTHING. Everything is immodest to someone! Most people agree dressing like a total slutbag at all times is not great for your classiness factor (mine is 8) but when a fundamentalist Islamic cleric rambles on about immodesty he's probably including any bare patch of female skin.

Most of what these fundamentalists believe has nothing to do with Islam anyway, it's just a byproduct of their extremely misogynistic, dated worldview inspired by a stagnant culture no one wants to interfere with because you get blown up or your head chopped off if you try to. =)

edit: Also hinduism is so crazy and colourful that it doesn't need people to make fun of it! It is like someone took a rainbow and make a religion out of it. This is not a bad thing since hinduism is pretty friggin' peaceful (and therefore good) overall, especially modern hinduism.

beliefs that are oppressive and prejudiced have no place in the modern world, deeply held or not. I mean, if it just so happened (it isn't, but just for the sake of example), that say, a core belief of Islam was 'FUCK BLACK PEOPLE CRUSH THEM BENEATH OUR HEELS', I don't think it would be cool to go 'Oh, it's okay for them to treat people like dirt, because that's what they believe! mean that's a bad example I guess so let's just stick to what IS; the oppression of women.

I mean, basically replace black people with women and that IS one of their core beliefs. But maybe I'm just being ig'nant.

No one is making fun of Islam, though. A bunch of scantily clad coeds are making fun of A FUNDAMENTALIST IDIOT WHO THINKS THAT IMMODESTY CAUSES EARTH QUAKES.

No one is saying "THIS IS ISLAM ,THIS IS ALL MUSLIMS". Are they?

I don't know, perhaps because I am a white agnostic American male I have difficulty understanding any reasonable sane person in the 21st century who would be genuinely and seriously offended by the idea of TITS as an abstraction. If cleavage offends you? Just don't look. (God/Allah will protect you from the resulting earthquakes.)

I think it's common knowledge that guys like the titties = earthquake guy are to Islam as Fred Phelps is to Christianity. Are you really saying that the average, "ordinary" Muslim on the street is going to be disgusted that somewhere in the world, there are boobies, how insensitive? Cause, by that logic people should really stop making porn...or probably movies in general.

I mean if this was everybody-fuck-out-of-wedlock day and the concern that was some Christians would be offended, I wouldn't really care then either. Maybe the issue is more that I just don't give a crap about organized religion especially when it is being really silly.
