TRAVELLING FOR A REASONBLE PRICE?
Posts
I admit this is sort of a 'PLEASE HELP' topic than one for actual discussion (although it would be great if it turned into one!), but I wanted to do some traveling for the summer, and well...From the looks of it it's pretty much going to make me broke. Can anyone point me to some resources to fly at a somewhat cheaper rate? Airplane tickets are literally killing me. I'm a student if that helps anything (it doesn't seem to)
Not the best option but I know you can get train tickets at a discount if you're a student. I went between home and college for years by train.

Where do you live, Solitayre? I haven't heard of anyone traveling by train for, like, ever.
And I'm not sure I can help you, Feld. I haven't been farther than two states away and I don't really know how to travel cheaply.

Since you're a student you can get better ticket prices through this:
http://www.statravel.com/
You would have to get the ISIC shown here to get the flight discount and some others as well:

Another site would be:
http://www.studentuniverse.com/
I don't know how they verify you're a student in that site.
Fel, if I may ask from where to where do you plan to travel and when? That would help me see if I could find you some deals elsewhere.
Thanks, I'll take a look at those. My itinerary is from Pittsburgh to Orlando. I wanted to leave in the middle of June, say, the 9th.

OK. I'll see what I can find although knowing how long you would stay would help too for plane tickets.
OK, a couple of other suggestions:
orbitz.com
southwest.com
Take into account the checked baggage fees. In that sense, Southwest would probably be cheapest. I found some combinations there around those dates that would come to $260. There are some cheaper from Airtran, but the baggage fees might get you.
There are couple of coupons here:
http://dealnews.com/categories/Everything-Else/Travel-Entertainment/Airfare/207.html?filter=c:207;&e=0
One is for Airtran and the other for American if you decide to go with those.
I checked the student websites and I am guessing there basically offering the normal tickets. Considering its after Memorial, the fares are very reasonable. Just make sure to buy early to get the better choices. The longer you wait the more expensive it gets!

I was checking out that Priceline 'Name Your Own Price' thing, where you 'bid' on a low price and they arrange it for you. Is that worth checking out?
Well, it's risky. You can get a good price, but what type of flight itinerary is uncertain (direct, 1 or more stops) as are airline, etc. Basically you don't any details except for dates of leaving and returning until your bid gets accepted. Also, see these restrictions:

You're stuck with whatever ticket you get assigned, that's what I read.

Yeah, also checked Greyhound and Amtrak. Not good at all. Greyhound takes over 1 day each way and you have to transfer (I did that and it was horrible, no food options, nasty bathrooms) at least once for $166. Amtrak is about the same time, but $296 with only 1 schedule.

also travel somewhere real like europe
If the friends I were visiting lived in Europe instead of Orlando, I would!
Don't worry geodude Mog will make a surprise visit in your mailbox someday.

Go to Atlanta instead. I'm going to be there (again) on June 8th and 9th.
Maybe you'll get inspiration for another XP-VX music video. :-D

ahem
Yeah amtrak is pretty much the shit. Mitsu's probably thinking of, like, steam engines or something.
I wish Amtrak used steam engines.

alright alright alright
So I think I got my immediate situation sorted out. I got some decent priced plane tickets for Orlando, and Amtrak is the way to go from here to New York City. However, more travel discussion/tips is okay, don't let the topic die if you still want to discuss.
okay
that made me laugh pretty hard
