Where do you live, Solitayre? I haven't heard of anyone traveling by train for, like, ever.

Amtrak really only works well if you live somewhere somewhere between Washington, DC and Boston. I once took the train between Philadelphia and Chicago. The only thing that's kind of stupid (although I don't know if it's true anymore) is that in New Haven, CT the change the engine from electric to diesel, which delays the trip for 30 min. The Acela Express is not much quicker than the normal trains, but at least now it has complementary wi-fi.

Why you would ask? It was a lot cheaper than Fel is probably paying to fly to Orlando. Took me 18 hours to get to Chicago, but on the return trip there was this 24 inch snowstorm. The return trip ended taking a whole day. They had the decency of giving us a voucher for food. A sister of mine who had fly into Chicago had to wait to extra days just to fly out.

Finally, taking the train is way more comfortable than being in a cramped plane or bus seat. At least in the plane, the trip will generally be quick. I took that same trip to Chicago using Greyhound and it was horrible! I had to get out of the bus to change buses in Pittsburgh and Cleveland in the middle of the night, so I couldn't get food. Not to mention that going to the bathroom in a bus is pretty bad. Plus the bus stations are so yucky. I actually found there are people who refuse to fly (even though in terms of passengers-miles it is still one of the safer ways to travel) who depend a lot on Greyhound to go from one place to another.

Yeah amtrak is pretty much the shit. Mitsu's probably thinking of, like, steam engines or something. I wish Amtrak used steam engines.

Steam engines are for romantics. They probably would use coal, the most polluting energy source of them all (that's what they use in China, a lot). The US is way behind in passenger train technology compared to say, Japan and France, and will never catchup.

I use a train to go to toronto or frenchcanuckland, they are long rides, but I like long rides.
I'd have to drive 2.5 ~ 3 hours to the nearest passenger train stop.

ride or dieeeeeeeeeeee
I take the train from a field of corn into Chicago and it be a fun time. Always see interesting people.

Yeah, most of them drive their own cars if they own one. The next choice, for those who can afford to do so would be to fly. Taking the bus is probably the cheapest, either locally or long distance. Finally, there's the train (doesn't include trolleys, the subway, metro or underground), which doesn't necessarily cover that many places and the frequencies aren't that good unless they are the local trains or along that NE corridor that I mentioned (Washington DC to Boston).

I was surprised to find so many Americans had never flown in a plane in their lives. Even less have ever taken a train anywhere. That's part of the reason why train technology in the U.S. is quite behind most places in Europe and Asia.

The population density is too low, I guess. Building rail networks is expensive.

Yes, that part of it. Also demand, cost and time comparison to alternatives factor into it, not to mention maintenance costs and acquiring rights of way.

well when they built the highway system they literally ripped up some rail lines for it, so...It's not just all the cost factors etc. XD

You're right. Much came due to the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956 including the Highway Trust Fund which pays for its maintenance, part of which comes from the federal fuel tax. Another side effect of that was the creation if not growth of suburbs to the cities.
Also a lot of it is because of how massive America is. In Europe, you can drive through several entire countries, and all of the major cities within those countries, in around the time it takes to drive through the plains and wilderness of one American state. To give you an example, Pittsburgh is on the west end of PA and Philadelphia is on the east end.

Both cool cities, but getting to one or the other is a pain in the ass because you have to go 8-10 hours of nothing of note in central PA to get back and forth to either. Central PA might as well be rural fucking Alabama. They should either nuke central PA and build another major city there, or create some sort of slipspace fold to bring the two cities closer together, because the middle has nothing worth noting.

Weird thing about flight prices is, they change drastically from day to day. You can go on Expedia.com and check the cost of going from X to Y for say, May 21, 22, and 23. 21 and 23 will cost $1800, but on May 22 it's $600. I am not exaggerating about the actual prices either! Check a bunch of different dates, ask a travel agent, etc. You can fly for much cheaper than it may initially appear. ^.^
