OVERWORLD MINI MAP TROUBLES.

Hello everyone,

I am pretty new to the forum but have been lurking for about a month :D

I have been working on a game for about 4 months now in RPG Maker 2k3, and plan to submit it to rmn upon completion. I am having trouble figuring out how to make a decent mini map for my "overworld" or "World Map". At the moment I have a tiny minimap appears whenever the player enters the airship. I think this is nice reward for getting the airship, instead of just increased mobility.

The problem:
I can't seem to make a proper tracking dot/beacon to indicate where the player is on the mini-map in relation to the world. I have messed around for a good 2 hours try to get it to convert right and I am just thinking it is not possible without the use of decimals :(.

My world map is 100x100 units large.
Rpg Maker 2k3's resolution is 320x240.
My mini-map picture is 1/5 the size of the resolution, so it is 64x48.

Anyone have a solution/suggestions?
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Here's how I do the minimap in my game:

This is an invisible event in the top left corner of the map.

You can see that I take the player's tile coordinates, multiply them by 2/5, and then add 3, to get the cursor's pixel coordinates. The 2/5 is because my minimap starts as a 1 pixel to 1 tile image of the world map, and then is scaled down to 40% size. The +3 is because I moved the minimap 3 pixels away from the corner of the screen - it just looked better that way.

In your case, you need to multiply the hero's x-coordinate by 64/100 and the hero's y-coordinate by 48/100, instead of multiplying them both by 2/5 like I did. And then add the margin, if you plan to have a small margin like I did. If you failed pre-algebra then this might be a bit difficult, but hopefully you can handle it.
I don't like the idea of a minimap. I want the player to literally get lost exploring things, find a secret cave and get killed by some ridiculously broken monster. Well not exactly, but you get my point.

Also, world map 100x100? I am at 200x200 and it's not even a whole continent.
100x100 is a small town in my game. "Small" being the keyword.
I can appreciate a 100x100 world map. Maybe he's got things nice and compact, like only half a dozen tiles or so between areas. Or maybe it's just not a very large game... both of which I can get down with.

Everybody else wants a minimap. Also, different mapping style/game size.

You should multiply before you divide. I know this goes against BODMAS, but RM2K/3 doesn't like fractions (if I remember correctly*) so you might get errors.

*I could totally be wrong about this, though...

Yes. When doing "fractions" in RM, you need to multiply by 100:

x = HERO X
x * 100
x / <map width>
x / 100

Just "x / y" will get gross due to decimals and RM*.

Man i really like this. (I still like to see where I'm going) but I get lost on purpose, just so I can find a secret cave and get killed by the broken monster.

This is what made Dragon Quest 8 so freaking great :D

I agree with your statement about DQ8, but I don't remember getting killed by any broken monsters. =P All of the recruitable monsters were fairly tame if you had a grasp on your party.
Originally I wrote the same thing, about the monsters being balanced and whatnot. Then I remembered TALOS. And of course, who can forget. HACKZILLA. Hackzilla is probably responsible for more deaths in DQ8 than the final boss himself.

TBH though, these guys weren't broken, they were just encountered at the wrong time, and also because you strayed off the beaten path!

I don't remember Talos being an issue, but Hackzilla? Yeah, I'll give you that one.
