One time this moron at charas-project tried to steal my and Ocean's games, claiming he made them himself. Someone on GW tipped me off, but it all backfired anyway because my games do NOT impress people (at least not at first glance).

Anyway, what TFT said is true, though he could have put it more nicely. This is the INTERNET. People steal commercial stuff out here! Think you can really protect your homebrew stuff?

This. It was a demo of Paradise Blue, someone claimed it was theirs. They had deleted some maps, didn't bother to change the games credits, so I could easily point out that they stole it. They removed the quest log so the game would break if you tried to use it.

Some people took Paradise Blue tiles without credit but in that case I don't care since a fair amount of that is FF1 edits (Since I started with FF1 graphics before deciding to remake the stuff). I also have custom music and a fair bit of custom graphics (especially monsters) so that I don't want people to use that. With graphics I can at least try to prove it was me since I can sprite someone and have my own pixel galleries that I can refer to if someone doesn't believe me. The problem is I don't frequent much places so I don't know what resource sites are out there.

I do tend to make my own stuff nowadays so the only credits I have to give are to myself and my friends that helped.

RRR's phail links.

EDIT: Oh hey you edited your post (I posted before you did so)
I'm with Ocean. I've graduated from the juvenile resource mongering, and the protection of/competition in the use of rips since I make my own stuff and have friends that help nowadays.

I can only recall one time someone clearly took resources from me that were custom, and that was the voice clips from SEB that I just happened to hear in some foreign RM videos on youtube. It's not a huge deal though. One advantage of making your own stuff is that it's very easy to pinpoint when someone is stupid enough to try and use them. Haha.

That link Craze posted pretty much says it all about the RM community at large.
Those signatures pretty much say it all.

I am glad we do not have signatures.

I wouldn't know. I turned off signatures at RRR. ::D
i turn off signatures everywhere :) so much neater!

I think the best way to defend yourself from plagiarism is to release the finished product. People who have no interest ripping graphics for their own projects will recognize your graphics/music and let them defend you from plagiarists

This.

And I'm also one of those people who are flattered by knowing someone else is using my resources.

There's not much point in this whole discussion. Even if MR.STEALER steals your resource and say it's his, someone else will take it and not credit MR.STEALER anyway.

This is a really silly viewpoint, Marlock.

Flattery is nice, except when it's not flattery but rather robbery.

That said, if you're using rips, oh well (unless you've heavily edited them). But if you're using heavy edits or from-scratch resources... yeah, that's an issue if it gets taken, even with credit.

Hello, I was the discoverer.

I don't remember which it was, just that it boiled down to a ton of people pretty much saying you can flip the bird to the professionals (because they get paid money or something) while amateurs/indie/notinabigbadbusiness get magical protection.

Also RRR isn't breaking the links, RMN is. It's fucking the & and changing it into '&%3B' Here's the correct links inside a URL tag so it won't get fucked up:

...but RRR links also break in mibbit. :<

Oh well.

EDIT: Maybe it was a different music track, then! I don't remember that happening for obsorber's game.

@BD_Design:

I used that charset in Iron Gaia: Virus. I did not know it was yours, because of the creator-obfuscating nature of plagiarism and the additional anonymizing effect of harvesting my resources from other people's game folders (cha-ching). Anyway I just wanted to say good work and uh, sorry.

If I ever found someone claiming* my RTP edits (or God forbid, my actual crappy original graphics) as their own I may have to go lung hunting. Unreasonable? Yeah, especially in the case of the edits. Do I care? Not particularly. I'm not exactly graphically inclined so even my edits are pwecious to me. Yes you are, awen't you my pweciouses, awen't yooo~

*AHEM* ^.^

*I don't mind people using them even if they don't give credit, but claiming them is another matter altogether. Rawr!

I should add that I grabbed some DQ monster rips from spriters'-resource and put them in RM2K/3 usable format, but remembered to add the rippers' name in the sets. It's just something small, but it's a way of saying thanks to him/her for actually going to the trouble of ripping them.

This seems like a pretty reasonable post.

Or maybe you're just thinking of when I slapped Max McGee for using freely-licensed music but just picking it out of Visions & Voice's audio folder. Expected, since Max is from that 2k3 time (I guess I am too but I grew out of rips*/scavenging), and technically fine, but it just feels gross since karsu and I picked that exact track for a specific moment in V&V (which Max didn't even see) and yeah. Technically legal, but gross/nasty/vulture-esque (yes I think the entire 2k3 community is a bunch of vultures except for YDS (why the fuck do you use 2k3 YDS)).

The funny thing is I don't think I even used that track in my game, and if I did I would have at least renamed it. I dump in a bunch of music and then use a process of elimination to get rid of the unused stuff. When I'm in a hurry to release, I sometimes get lazy with the process of elimination part.

If we're talking about Wanderer, like 100% of the music actually used in that is from Lost Oydssey, IIRC.

The track was discovered because Karsuman played <random legiongame> (To Arms!, I think) and was like "waaaaaaaait a second."

But that's neither here nor there (and the track is open-license with credit anyway).

This reminds me of that time when that... guy had that giant hissy fit because someone stole a tree he had made and didn't ask, only much more stupid.

This is completely different. The person who made that tree made it for a commercial project and the person who took it was entirely in the wrong. iirc, the person who made it wasn't at all a dick about it, especially considering it was extremely detailed pixel art created for cash money reasons. Stealing one RPGMaker game's graphics (that are edits) and using them in another RPGMaker game for non-profit reasons (and probably never releasing your crummy game anyway) is another ballpark altogether. Please don't equate the two, and please don't say that the creator of the graphics in question overreacted, since he didn't (any overreaction was due to mob mentality taking control and bandwagon jumping going berserk).

That was on gw right. I totally remember because of what a cunt he was being.

I disagree with this so much. His reaction was completely justified. You two seem to disvalue the effort that art takes.
The guy who flipped out was Konix. There's a well-known (and well-liked) member here who had a similar reaction -- tardis.
Take a look at this. BlindMind took Konix's tree, edited it for the purposes of his game and did not ask for permission--it's pretty much the same. You take someone's art, you use it for your own purposes, you do not ask for permission.

What calunio did here is very admirable and respectable, but rare. He asked tardis for permission to use his art, he didn't just go ahead and take it. Even though tardis said no, that was the proper way to do things. It's wrong to just take someone's work if they don't allow you to. Even if it's just sitting there, it doesn't mean you can take it. Yes people post it on the internet, but they post it off for your viewing pleasure, not for you to take and use as your own.

Honestly, have the two of you guys ever done serious art? Not just art that looks pretty or is quick to do, (this is probably going to sound super pretentious) but art that is born of passion. It's true. People who make art tend to REALLY care about their art. If you really cares about something and spent time and effort on it, how would you feel if someone took your work without telling you or asking?

What if someone took your game and presented it as their own?

You'd flip the fuck out.

I think people should stick to open-license stuff but that's never gonna happen!

open-licensing our custom work, or having people who normally use rips use open-licensed work instead?

I imagine the latter.
