...I still find myself thinking about how exactly I want to end it...
Cliffhanger. Then make two inferior games after it that aren't anywhere near as good as the first, but annoy people since they want to see the story finish. Trilogy~

Xenosaga 3 was actually good, and Xenosaga 2's story was good but the gameplay was hampered by stupid design choices and the decision to go with any composer now named Kajiura or Mitsuda.
Memorable endings...

NES:
Willow
Crystalis
Metal Gear
Metal Gear 2: Snake's Revenge
Bionic Commando
Golgo 13
Bad Dudes (gotta love watch the president eating a cheeseburger)

SNES:
Breath of Fire 2
Illusion of Gaia
Final Fantasy VI
Chrono Trigger
Super Mario RPG

Playstation and beyond:
Xenogears
Lunar 1 and 2
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy X (and yes I also liked X-2)
Wild Arms (including Wild Arms Alter Code F)
Resident Evil 2 (loved that "Time to take down Umbrella" line, and then goes into rock music)
Metal Gear Solid

RPG Maker games:
A Blurred Line (although not an ending to the series, definately a great cliff-hanger)
A Home Far Away

You like the ending of FF7? Why? Oh wait now that I think about it most of the endings you like are the one with cliffhangers, disregard LOL.

I think an ending is as good as the writer. There are a lot of endings that are good but are cliffhangers, like the one in that FF movie everyone hated. But then there are bad ones that makes you hate the movie/game like FF7. But ultimately it also depends on the public, for example I never liked the ending of FF7 but amer(whatever) liked it so it depends on what you like and don't like.

Of course there is the ending of FEAR 2. Oh god, I can't even express what I think of that ending.

Unlike commercial games, I don't think that amateur games languish under the yoke of bad endings. I think that amateur games struggle with never getting to the ending at all.

No, The Departed, it does not work because you kill every single character

That's why it's called The Departed!
When I first played FF7, I thought the ending was SO FUCKING EPIC! OMG

I still remember it fondly, although I haven't owned the game since like 7th grade.
And remember, I said "Memorable Endings", not necessarily good endings, but endings that somehow stayed fresh in my mind for years to come. As for FF7, I played it almost immediately after it hit Playstation, so at the time I had not played any game previously that had such cinematics. I admit I was caught up in the eye candy. I haven't played FF7 for so long now, and I know it's not as great as it might have once been, and if anything I prefer the classic NES/SNES days.

Besides, Xenogears has and always will be my favorite.
Ugh, hated FF7 both times I tried playing it. Almost beat it the second time.

And yes, Xenogears was the best game ever made without a doubt.

Terranigma's ending made me bawl.
I liked the FFXIII ending. It was so happy, lovey-dovey, and sensual.

Personally, though, I like endings with the main character (or one of the main characters) dying, be it a sacrifice, or being caught in the crossfire. (Not the retarded Pokemon: The First Movie ending, though.)

Did we play the same FF13? I don't remember it being sensual and lovey-dovey. I don't remember much of that PKMN movie but I didn't find it that bad. In fact it was the only PKMN movie I liked.
Well, here's the reason why I think it is so lovey-dovey and sensual.

Everything went okay in the end. Sazh got his son back, Snow was free to bang SERAH!!!, and Vanille and Fang are together forever, staring, touching, caring.
I like Lufia 2 ending, in the end of battle Maxim lose his wife and the main boss went to kill his son, so this is no longer battle to save the world but to save his son, although in the end Maxim also lost his live.

The BGM "The one who save the world" and "Into the future" also make this ending so great, i almost cry at the end when Maxim soul came to visit his son last time.

Now they remake Lufia 2 in NDS i cant wait to play it again.
