POSSIBLE IDEA: RMN PLATINUM (OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT)
Posts
Something that is nice about RMN is that it hosts tons of different games. This however comes at a fairly steep price that is the bane of this kind of organization.... the truly remarkable games get lost in the sea of others. Having so many games makes it feel like a big pile of games that you have to rummage through.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting a complete revamp of the sites organization (which on a whole is great) but rather to give permanent recognition to the best of the best RM games.
I know that there's already a 'featured games' and a rating system in place, but it doesn't quite do justice, which is why I propose...
The RMN Platinum Awards!
Or you can call it something else, whatever floats your boat.... but basically it'd be a list of maybe 3 or 4 of the finest games RMN has to offer. This would not only give these games the recognition they deserve, but it also helps newcommers to the RMN see the best we have to offer.
Yes???!! :)
...welp.

We have discussed this time and again, and it is impossible to come to any kind of agreeable concensus. And, inevitably, whatever happens a shitstorm ensues.
However, the New to RMN? FAQ has a list of recommended games.

I have an idea: Let's do this every year for the best games. We don't have to call it "Platin"... what about the name "Misao"? That sounds more intelligent and important. ;-) Just a random word that came to my mind... no meaning needed.

Woops I accidentally ctrl v'd by mistake, SILLY ME! Well I'll just leave this here for no reason.

The Misaos in their current form are worthless.
The misaos' purpose are really just a big popularity contest in order to know what games people actually give a shit about. It's not worthless.
What's preventing us from drumming up misao hype near the end of the year? But to be honest the whole voting all year long thing is an experiment, only time will tell if it will be successful. Though I guess more common awareness (aka "what does that vote button do?") would help more.
edit: did you just stealth edit your post again? o_O

Looking at those Misaos, it's really cool, but it's still not as focused as a Platinum award.
And no one would get their feelings hurt if they didn't get a plat because it would be reserved for the best-of-the-best-of-the-best.
Plus, RMN needs some "flagships"

It's really easy to find the "best of the best" at least for an individual. When you have all of this:

I really don't think yet another super duper amazing platinum awards show is going to change anything.

I think it should however inform users if the game was once featured and when in the database (perhaps next to the name or something) rather than just the topic on the forum. Not all of the members use or visit the forums. I don't care what anyone says, people judge games by their profile and having that would certainly improve chances of a download.

Each year there is only ONE game determined "Full game of the year". So new kids can just start with that if those list are too massive for them.

Hmmm, so there's a Misao for overall game of the year? I can't find it /cry
Maybe that's the key, just make more awareness for games that have been featured or have won a Misao award...
Real men only appreciate the Wisaos:

Here's the issue with awards: the site has absolutely no claim as to what are the better games. I don't want the site to really ever push its opinion users. Even Featured Game gets my panties in a wad sometimes, due to this.
The only kind of way to really measure the "best games" is either by review score or by popularity. The Misao voting is a way to deal with popular vote mechanics. I've had a few numerous ideas on where to take this and they all still retain the current idea: a constantly shifting list of votes that people are able to change as they see fit.
The site already averages out review scores but there has been a lot of strife about its implementation. The site is currently very fair in that every review is equal to the score calculator. Some people have asked reviews be weighted based on the reviewer, but this is very UNFAIR and very gameable.
So what to expect? Right at this moment, nothing. I'm not going to create an award system that goes around the existing site mechanics. But I will be reworking the Misao stuff so it makes more sense and hopefully increase participation.
