DECIDING WHAT ENGINE TO USE?

Hi everyone.

I want to put together a 3/4 view shooting game a la "Smash Tv" I've seen this done in game maker, but I'm not using sprites like that. Instead I'm using backgrounds and characters/monsters from SNES RPG's. So I was wondering, is this possible in RPGMaker?

The controls would be 3 buttons for shooting different things, and 8 way directional buttons for the movement of all monster and the player character.

well, I would suggest rm2k3 if your wanting to use an rpg maker. and just look for an ABS(active battle system) to code for it. You may have to toggle around, but eh.
Rpgmaker is honestly a terrible choice for that. You should really stick with Gamemaker, especially if you're a new programmer. Programming that system in Rpgmaker is hellish even when you have extensive knowledge of the program. If you read a couple tutorials on Gamemaker, I'm sure you would have a much easier time.
Yeah, Gamemaker would be the way to go with this project. RPG maker is not really suited to this type of game.
