FF 8 drove it to the cliff but FF 12 pushed it over and built a mall over the corpse.

Interesting.

I think the homogenization of characters is what killed it. Let there be a healer, tank, dps.
I wouldn't say there were any games that "ruined" the series, more like strange business decisions and lack of talent/vision in the SquareEnix departments. However one thing I like about the FF series is that everyone has a very different opinion on which is the best FF game, which is the worst, which count (FF11? X-2?) and what place each of them have on mental tier lists. Almost every game tried something new, and that's rare to see in any VG series.
Considering each title has nothing to do with the last, I think this topic is rather stupid. Some are better than others, but to blame any one title for destroying the ones that followed makes no sense to me. There are also different teams working on separate entries, so maybe commenting on those teams would be more worthwhile.
I haven't liked the direction they've taken past FF6 myself. I wouldn't claim any of them have ruined the series though. It's easily one of the most successful video game franchises in history, and it's still going strong. It's kinda like trying to pick out when they ruined the Mario series. :/
I don't think any specific game ruined the series, rather the people behind those games. When they strayed away from the "Dream Team" and hired new directors, composers and artists it kind of went downhill for me.

But like darken said, everyone has their opinion of which FF is the best, and which is the worst, so it'll be hard to say that one game specifically ruined everything.

My views however are that after FF10, things started to drop. It seems like the teams just concentrated on being artsy and pretty pretentious about everything, rather than focusing on the game being fun and having an engaging story. I think all this culminated in FF13, where there was basically no game at all, just a bunch of flashy graphics and simple things getting over complicated, with dialogue being bogged down by nonsensical terms that don't have any explanation until far after they are introduced, even then not making much sense.
Easy! Final Fantasy: Spirits Within.

This lead to Square's financial ruination and as a result we have been BOMBARDED with spinoffs, remakes, ports and over-focus on cinematics!

FF12. Total garbage.

See, I think FF12 is a fun game with lots to do, a decent story enhanced by the game's permeating pretentiousness and great graphics.

FF12 had a story? :P

Square has actually been doing some of this before SWithin, but I do not deny the damage that movie caused.

Oh, I get it.

You've never played it; you're just parroting the internetz.
I almost made it to the top of the first tower in FF12.

(yes I own FF12)
You can make these kinds of arguments with any video game franchise. There are people who believe that Ocarina of Time ruined the Zelda franchise, people who believe SotN ruined the Castlevania franchise, and don't get me started on what people say about the Sonic franchise.

I'll have to agree with you on that.

However, I don't think any have really "killed" the franchise as of now. I've only played a handful of them, but I liked FFX, I do want to play FFXIII, and I might try FFXII just to see if it's as bad as people say, because I have heard some people who have had some good things to say about it.
Here's the thing: I loved FFXII...at first. Then when the game pretty much started to play itself (which I think Square knew would happen), they started putting in more and more obscure puzzles that would make Simon's Quest seem easy to figure out.

Maybe I just sucked at Gambits, but I never could just let the game play itself - I had to input commands all the time to survive. And if I did set up Gambits well, that would mean... I was playing the game correctly, by playing the game to unlock the Gambits and spending the time to set them up.

I don't get the "play itself" argument when you have to play it for it to supposedly "play itself."

And what puzzles? It's a hack-and-slash dungeon crawl. Well, okay, there's that one forest mirage puzzle, but if you swing the camera around eventually you're going to figure it out.

I played FFXII for the bosses. FFXII's bosses weren't excellent design-wise (most of the time - hello Elder Wyrm. :<), they were just downright fun to fight!

FFXII is a game that needed more of these - it needed to be harder. As it was, you could just autoattack your way through the scrubs of the in-between areas, and that's no fun. Going after the bosses - some of which were just plain intimidating - was the only point where the combat as fun.
From what I can tell from the one's I've played (which is most of them) is that they're all above average, but none of them have been particularly mind-blowing.
