lol $5 for a medium popcorn.
I guess theaters have to get their money somewhere.
I suspect that's the REAL reason they check in bags. Because who honestly gives 2 shits about piracy? Not the police thats for sure, since there is like, a pirate video shop TWO BLOCKS down from the police post!
It's usually $12 or so for a popcorn+pop, here. They're both pretty large, but it's still... popcorn+pop. Pop costs almost literally nothing and popcorn is so cheap it's not worth imagining. The worst part about it is how actively they promote these prices with GIANT BANNERS like it's a GREAT DEAL. ONLY $100 FOR A SINGLE TWIZZLER!!!! ACT NOW AND WE'LL THROW IN A PUNCH TO YOUR DICK
Theaters actually make most of their money from concessions. The movies just get people to come buy the concessions.
Hooray for taking two classes of Economics 101! I go my third in an hour, so I'm basically an expert.

It is pretty common.
EDIT:
how many "Airbender is shitty" topics do we need, anyway?
My dad wants to make me watch this. Apparently the opinion of 'internet people' doesn't count.

Obviously you've been a naughty girl!
So I saw the film on my flight to Doha and I'm not one to jump on bandwagons but it actually was pretty shite!
Popcorn is part of the cinema experience but this film (by the looks of it) is not worth going to even if they were handing out free tickets. Shame really as I liked the cartoon series.
Here's what all avatar fans (including myself) need to do upon scarring themselves with this movie. Watch the entire series in one sitting. This will take some time but I found that at least watching my favorite episodes kept me from flying into a blood rage and demanding the directors head on a pike in my front lawn.
As an afterthought, the popcorn was pretty awesome that time...

All you Avatar fans can be glad that at the very least, it works in it's intended, animated format. Just like DBZ and its awful movie tie-in, as well as the upcoming Akira monstrosity (being rewritten into two movies, hopefully it will suck less), although the manga was definitely better than the anime.
Speaking of popcorn, I just got a Cuisinart popcorn popper today. This thing kicks all manner of ass. I swear I'm never going back to microwave greasebags again.

My mother prefers to buy a bag of popcorn kernels and just pop them in a regular pan with vegetable oil. I'll admit that it does taste better than the plastic+paper bag stuff. Something that I truly miss are those holiday popcorn cans, you know, the ones that contain 3 different flavors.
Though on the discussion of movies and snacks, we've always just gone to the store and bought some skittles or something and stored them in my mother's purse. Around here, they must not fret about hidden cameras and the sort.
Over here you can bring hot food into the cinemas, mainly because most of our cinemas are either the top floor of a mall or in a kinda food court building. I remember last time bringing in hot dogs from Wendys milkshake place in. Not all cinemas are like this though.
