WHY DQIX IS MORE PROGRESSIVE THAN YOU

Posts

It isn't the mechanics of a game (cool or otherwise; some of those ideas aren't that "progressive" or "cool" IMO) that matter, it is how well they are implemented.

The best RM* games aren't always the ones that push the boundaries, they're just the ones that do things well - we have enough problems doing that...
I'm going to second that notion. I consider implementation far more important than the ideas themselves.

New ideas are nice, but the RPG genre has existed for a long time and is still struggling to make battles more than just attack/strongest move + heal. I take an old fashioned RPG which successfully manages to encourage strategy over one with a lot of new idea, but where battles are still just offensive move + heal spam any day.
I really hope you guys don't say this every time a "let's talk about cool ideas" because I think implementation over innovation is really obvious and isn't really related to the point.

Well, if someone post a cool idea an I spot a potential flaw, I make sure to voice my concern. That way if the idea eventually is implemented it will hopefully not contain the mentioned flaw.

Other than that, I have seen posts containing cool ideas (actually, I don't consider most of the ideas Craze listed cool) which wasn't jumped like this topic.

I guess the main point was that DRAGON QUEST, of all series, was doing these things but this topic is mostly a fail.

I'm glad you finally recognize this.

I hate Dragon Quest IX for coming out before my game did. I swear I it was like the developers and I had our minds tuned to the right frequency and thought of of the same ideas! Oh well, they did things 10x better than what I was going to do. Plus, they released the game. I don't know if I'll ever get to that point.
^ Dragon Quest IX isn't the first game to use angel themes and Norse story elements.
The same thing happened to me with Dragon Warrior VII's release and the use of shards to unlock different lands on the world map.

It's about how well you make the game, not what's in it.
My motto is, if you can't beat 'em, emulate 'em
It's about how well you make the game, not what's in it.

No it makes perfect sense! See, if I make a game that is built well and looks great, but is only five minutes long, then I made the best game ever! But if I stuff it with needless things like a story or gameplay, it would bog the whole thing down and make it crap.
Still doesn't make enough sense nor does it sound correct.

i got to play this at PAX. it wasn't for me.

not a fan of level scaling, the menus were atrocious, and the fights just weren't engaging. not to mention all those jaggy, jaggy pixels in the horrible 'i am a ds jrpg' graphics literally sliced my eyes open. the angel thing right from the beginning was a turn off for me (what is this tales of symphonia throw that shit out) and none of the opening sequence really grabbed me. i kept going for a while, but eventually ran out of steam. felt a bit like it was trying too hard on all fronts. DW3 on gameboy will always be the one for me, i suppose.

grammar what

all of that said, i dug the character customization. i wish it had been a tiny bit more in-depth, but i was able to create a short albino black man named CRUNK and i saw that it was good. a couple moments were so lol-worthy that i snapped a few shoddy pictures of the screens while i was playing.

There was leveling scaling? I know the experience monsters handed out was curved. However, I don't remember monsters leveling when my characters got stronger.

Because it's my sworn duty from up high to torture you for the rest of your days. You can count on me to be everywhere!
@Tardis:
That's actually correct grammar. 'The enemy' can be singular or plural, and that battle did have multiple individual enemies in it.
