CUSTOM MENU

I think you shouldn't be doing a CMS if you barely understand variables. I'm sure the default menu is enough for a basic RPG. Maybe make a game with mostly default stuff first, learn variables/forks/showpictures through SIMPLE systems.
I really don't see you surviving the 'display number' hell.

You basically need to devise a way to store the player's 3D cursor and menu location information in a 1D variables form and concoct a way to display and utilize all of that in a meaningful manner. How you do that is up to you as each game's menu system is likely different in some way from the next.
thanks king_arthur! this method worked for me! i recommend it to everyone

Well, Im starting to understand them more as I go through all of this and I wanted to try something new for a change. Its just the coordinates i needed for the cursor movement messed up and now i need to fix that before i can start anything else.

i was hoping to make something similar to FF7
This is rich.
Good luck with it, you got some good help.
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Well, honestly making a CMS is not a bad way to learn variables. If you can use them for really basic things like bringing a party member up to the average level, then making a simple menu is a good next step. It's obviously harder than moving a single picture around, but easier than, oh, say, for instance, creating an automatic Sudoku puzzle generator.
