MAPPING STANDARDS AND COMMERCIAL GAMES

Posts

In the interests of RMN, is there a feasible way to showcase other elements of a game in an easily-digestible format for random passerbys?

Like, we have the Images tab for gameprofiles. Would it be possible to have some sort of Tropes tab for story and character showcasing, or a Gameplay tab that has a collection of somethings that showcase how the game plays? Or maybe a Music tab to showcase music and sound within the game.

I am being serious here. Is there a way to minimize the "mapping-must-be-awesome-so-that-I-get-noticed" effect in RM communities?

EDIT:
Maybe I will take this discussion to a new thread

There is nothing stopping anyone from showcasing their music or gameplay features, game profiles can already add extra pages for exactly these reasons.

A Tropes tab, however, sounds monumentally stupid.
But only images are official. All those other things don't bump you up the games list, don't send out notifications to subscribers, and don't get shown on the front page.

Tropes were the first thing that came to mind when i was trying to think of something that works as a common element among all stories. Like, all games have a visual element that can be showcased quickly as images, and all games have a story element that can be showcased quickly as <BLANK>.

Blogs, kentona?

Yeah I really wish people would utilize their blogs more.
Perhaps. But they are more focused on game creation progress elements.

I am simply trying to address the issue of "screenshots are the only way to differentiate yourself from the masses", but if no one else thinks this is an issue, I will stop trying to brainstorm on it.

Hey, by all means, man. I wasn't negating your ideas, but I just wanted to add that blogs certainly can help and they're under utilized.

Oh. Well, continue brainstorming, because I know that I don't even read game profiles when deciding to download or Let's Try a game. (Seriously. I have no idea what's on the gamepages of Dragonlands/Legend of Denadel/Vacant Sky/etc.)

My justification is that I have no desire to play an ugly game unless Karsuman directs me to it or something (he loves ugly games).

This is just the way things are. It is an issue that spans far beyond the scope of RMN.
"What makes YOU decide to play a game?" would make a good poll question.

Too bad the people we would want to poll probably would never bother to answer this (the passerbys).

This doesn't mean we can't do something about it here.

Games advertised and posted in forums used to be "just the way things are", too. And now RMN has slick gameprofiles.

Integrate it into the top menu somehow.

"While waiting for your download to finish, let us know why you decided to download it!"

EDIT:
I've really hijacked this thread. :<
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

As far as Locke was talking about WoW, the Barrens was supposed to feel barren, obviously. It was big, it was sparse, and it was dead (besides a few towns and oasises).

I realize that that's the official excuse. But I specifically picked Hellfire Peninsula as my counterexample because it's also a barren wasteland desert. They're fundamentally the same type of area, which makes the stark difference in quality really hard to justify.

A think a "videos" section would be the simplest and most sensible. It is hard to show player interaction in a still image, but a video can do that much more easily. In fact, there's very little you can't show in a video. People could make gameplay demonstrations or cinematic trailers, depending on what they wanted to show.

Not everyone has access to a recording program, but I do agree with this idea.

CamStudio is free and open source and works excellent. This is a lousy excuse for not making videos.

Let me correct that: Not everyone KNOWS of a free and open source program.
I always thought a well done trailer does a good job at introducing the game. In fact the first 10 seconds of YDS's LT of Space Funeral made me play Space Funeral (If you're wondering my laptop is the only way for me to play rm2k3 games as of now).

There can be a short little paragraph on the site next to such a feature explaining to users some free and open source programs.
A tutorial on how to make a trailer (or even better, how to make an effective trailer) would be welcome.

Because I really do make lousy videos.
