GAMES THAT HAVE STOOD THE TEST OF TIME?

Alundra. Such brilliance even surpasses Legend of Zelda's puzzles.

I couldn't sit down and play that through. Always reach a brick wall of non interest at the beginning. Innocent Sin was the opposite, though.
The early Final Fantasy games, I'll say up to part VII stood the test of time, even though VII looks terrible today, it's story and characters are still one of the best IMO.

Chrono Trigger, great somewhat cheesy plot, addictive game play mechanics and graphics the best for their time and even still good today.

A lot of other classics like the Mario games, the old Sonic Games.. I felt Shadowrun for the SNES was wonderful and so was Lufia II.
Personally, I think Might & Magic 4 and 5 hold up pretty well. I'm not familiar with the other games though.

Seiken Densetsu 3 is, for whatever reason, one of the most replayable games ever for me.

Also: Thirding Destiny of an Emperor.
I'm going to dispute some examples just to get some of that possible discussion going. (I'm only going to choose ones I've actually played but looking at screenshots of Destiny of an Emperor that game hasn't stood the test of time at all. The Interface looks VERY clunky)

P-P-P-Pong.

And Civilization.

Well Pong might still have its moments of fun but Civilization certainly doesn't. The game has been surpassed infinitely by it's sequels. Now you may argue which Civ is actually the best but I think everyone agrees that Civ1 is pretty primitive in a comparison.

[quotePacman is a great example of this. How many ports has that game had already?
Pacman has some appeal but the gameplay is not very compelling to a modern audience. The only reason anyone would play pacman today is if it was free and then only in two minute chunks at best.

The first couple of Final Fantasy games have horribly oudated interfaces and almost no charm and no writing. There's also very little to the casual gamer there so it doesn't even have the two minute chunk appeal that Pacman might have. Basically there's no reason a modern gamer who isn't a masochist would play through these games.

That is the most appropriate picture I have ever seen on the internet. Ever.
DoaE's interface is nowhere near as clunky as Final Fantasy or Dragon Warrior. It wasn't bad enough to bother me much, and I have a pretty low tolerance for that kind of thing. It did bother me that you start with equipment that's not equipped, but hey. (Or maybe that was DoaE2 where that happened. Now I can't remember!)
starcraft

oh god im sorry that was so inappropriate

How is that inappropriate? Starcraft is clearly a timeless classic.

How does Chrono Trigger have addictive gameplay mechanics? It's exactly the same as every other ATB game out there. It wasn't until I was 18 that I actually played Chrono Trigger and I was stunned by how primitive, boring, and uninnovative it was. There is no reason to play that game in the modern day aside from the nostalgia factor. Everything it has done has been done by another game since, and better. That aside, Chrono Cross had a far more innovative and engaging set of gameplay mechanics.

Also, in before "it's different from Trigger thus it sucks"

No, it sucks because of it's bad story and shitty pacing, characters(Some exceptions here) and elements system. But hey that's my opinion.

I'd say, even though there not that old the Jak games, especially the first are still amazing to play.

Chrono Trigger has tons of charm and swagger. I know quite a few people who played CT for the first time recently and they fell in love with it. I notice that if you look at a game outside of the "GAMEPLAY ELEMENTS/SPECS/ATB/TECHNICAL INNOVATION/BLAH BLAH" box, you can enjoy it a lot more. As someone who's designing a game I understand I have to be aware of all that stuff, but from a player standpoint I honestly don't give a fuck about any of it to a certain degree.

Honestly I can see how the film crowd views movies in a much more timeless fashion than video games. I still enjoy movies from over 40 years ago. Video game fans, however, are much more punishing and scrutinize the shit out of everything. That is not fun.

tl:dr everyone should play games for the swagger factor
I know what you mean. Chrono Trigger is my favorite game, and it has to do with a lot more than just gameplay/story. CT manages to give you a very unique experience overall that is very hard to put into words. And for the record, I played it like 3 years ago, no where near when it was supposed to be played.
Yeah CT's battle system had more to do with being really well animated and fun to watch. You didn't run into the battles to dish out numbers, you wanted to see Crono and Robo do some badass hurricane combo. Stuff like that felt like you had presence in the battle. Most of the differences made about the battle system were done outside of the battles, "let us get rid of the random battle bullshit" philosophy being one of them. Excuse me while I get crunkkkkkd with ayla and her tribe.
I never played Chrono Trigger until nearly a decade after I played Chrono Cross and I fell in love with it. It has nothing to do with outdated game mechanics. I can play a Dragon Quest game I've never played before nowadays and still play it through to the end, despite the archaic text menus. The DQ games are incredibly balanced and provide a challenge, at least, the DS versions do. It's obviously not nostalgia since I've never played Dragon Quest IV and V until after I played DQVIII for the Playstation 2, which is what jumpstarted my interest in the series.

Different games can stand the test of time to different people. Obviously, there are some universal exceptions, but overall, I'd say games from yesteryear aren't as outdated as you think they are.
Pleas lets not derail this thread with CC/CT debate. Both are great games and I love them both equally, each is unique in its own way. With that said, lets move on.
