Tactics Ogre: Let Us Send Canopus to Kill the Leader Before Our Dumb as Bricks AI Allies Kill Themselves
I played some the translation of it, great, but not that great. Heh and properly because this is the only tactics ogre topic in rmn.
I really love the Ogre Battle series, mostly for nostalgia's sake. I remember waiting anxiously for 2-3 months after Ogre Battle 64 and the strategy guide were ordered online for Christmas- there were problems with shipping and I remember my mom warning me it might not arrive! (But it did. Crisis averted.)
It's just AWESOME loading the game up and hearing that great old title screen song. So far the game's pretty fun as well- it feels like a genuine 'sequel' to Final Fantasy Tactics (I don't know the history too well, I think the original TO came out before FFT on the PS1, but I know some/all of the same people were involved)- but you have classes as groups leveling up in addition to customizing individual characters by learning new abilities. It's like Ogre Battle and FFT came together to make the sweetest most best tactical RPG evar!!
Not a spoiler: Currently in Chapter 2, law route, in the Phorompa Wildwood. I stopped playing because the class system can be really frustrating in leveling up *new* character classes. In FFT I didn't really have a problem with leveling up in random battles- set everybody to AI, with 4 experienced characters and the 1 newbie. In TO you can use AI controls as well, but the battles are much larger than in FFT and my AI-controlled party gets overwhelmed half the time. I'm not sure if I should do AI-controlled level-grinding in the earlier regions of the game (difficult to reach, at least on the law route in C2) or if it's just unavoidable, but after playing 20+ hours and getting stuck in the Wildwood I just feel burnt out. I played and beat Half-Minute Hero instead (AWESOME game). And I just feel more burnt out knowing about some of the crazy time-intensive challenges and rewards: Wheel of Time stuff, that one particular tomb dungeon, the unique character classes involved with that whole tomb....
Any tips from anyone who's played the game further or even beaten it?

hey does anyone know if there's any point in tactics ogre where "make everyone an archer with no armor" isn't the best strategy
My grinding method was to go to the Xaed Moors whatevers. Random encounters are always with the undead. Bring archers with Baldur Bows/Crossbows, guys to level up, and set everybody on AI. Baldur Bows (or their +1 variant, I'm not sure) wreck the undead throughout most of the main game. It's also a good time to switch Canopus to Crossbows since he can't use 2H bows (well, as a Vartan at least) and Crossbow finishing moves are pretty good and you get a lot of weapon EXP.
I've been really getting into this game lately, I'm now on Chapter 3. So far, it's been fairly easy, but now it looks like things are going to start taking a turn for the tough.
I really like how much customization you can develop your heroes in this, there is more available than the original. :D Plus this soundtrack sounds so awesome, I've been a hardcore fan of the Ogre series music. :D

Argghh... I *do* have Baldur Bows and a couple of Archurs, plus Canopus and a second Vartan I had recruited that use crossbows. It just annoys me that I feel like I have to play the game this way, and it feels unreasonable that I can't just enter a random battle, have a balanced party of ranged, melee, and magic with 1-2 healers and only ONE character grinding for levels, and then set AI to Win. Maybe this wouldn't be such an issue if grinding were quick and easy when NOT using AI controls.
Ah well, maybe I'll still go back to Tactics Ogre sometime and just allow my Archers to reach stupidly-high experience levels killing lots of undead, while the rest of my party just kind of tags along for the ride. Eggh... (goes back to P4)

So far I have 3 archers with 3 types of Bows, the Longbow, Bowgun, and the regular bows. I like the Long Bow, but its starting to lose its value due to being so late in the game.
only 3 archers? damn son, you need to step it up
hey guys watch me beat this dead horse until someone snaps and murders me. please murder me

Yeah, I know... I guess I was just hoping the game might be, you know, kind of fun to play? Like I could try out a bunch of character classes and monsters, maybe see what I like? Maybe mix and match a little, I mean nothing absurd like a party strictly of Clerics, but just kinda... treat it like it were a GAME? But oh well. Tactics Ogre is like that friend that says they're up to doing whatever for Friday night but then whenever you suggest anything BESIDES watching the movie Caddy Shack they bitch and moan at you until you give up and put in the Caddy Shack DVD. And Caddy Shack is good... but not THAT good. Am I right?!
Dear God, I must have this game!
I may just have to replay some of the original to get myself psyched up.

Comment: Around late Ch3-Early Ch4 I switched Canopus to crossbows because a Baldur Bow+1 only goes so far. Holy shit the crossbow's finishing move is amazing
tl;dr Bows and Crossbows own
also fuck the level requirement for shit. My guys have been stuck at level 17-18 for ages now. I only have a ton of cash because nobody can equip the new gear+1 versions yet. Or use the latest magic.
Except Caponus+thearcherchick. Because archers fucking own and they're always being used. The only thing they can't murder are octopuses and dragons.
