WHATS YOUR FAVORITE HISTORICAL CIVILIZATION ?
Posts
@ Craze:
I agree, they have a mystic feel about them. Especially the post Atlantis days of Kemet, the Mayans, the Aztecs, Ancient India/Persia and the Greeks which are all my favorites because of their fascinating stories of ancient gods ( aliens ) and there fantasy like architecture and culture.
Imo ancient astronauts sparked off civilization and where seen as gods, angels e.t.c.
I also loved the Celts for inventing DADGAD and celtic guitar and the indian sitar for inspiring really trippy music like Kashmir ( Led Zepplin ).

You could say Atlantis is more of a myth or fable, we don't have solid evidence or text books about it much but that doesn't mean it never existed.
When was the last time you learned about the Mayans or Aztecs in class but only for a brief time, or Kemet
( before it was taken over and destroyed ) before it became Egypt?
Some civilizations date so way back we're in a way slowly forgetting about them, also some history seems to be forsaken on purpose. For example the existence of Atlantis and ancient astronauts most likely angered religious beliefs the same way evolution angered the catholic church.
( how our genes are a mixture of animal and alien genes, the gene isis, how we came into existence in this world, you can read more on wikipedia don't wanna bore you with a super long post lol ^_^ )
thus it might have been deliberately forgotten. Why, we would rather believe we were made from stars and light than having evolved through alien interference from apes.
No one ever talks about how real Egyptians where very intelligent and advanced Africans not Arabs or whatever, they where more interested in spirituality, culture, literature, astronomy and the like while most other civilizations where more focused on survival and war like the vikings, the real Egyptians where more rooted and I believe where descendants from Atlantis . Its already provable, all the Egyptians noses where broken off by the Romans because they had African features, most of the real Egyptians where forced out of their land while the Persians ( Arabs ) and Romans e.t.c wrote in history that they where the real Egyptians, that Africans where never at any point advanced and intelligent.
What you read in books, whats magnified by the media and so on is hardly 100% truth. Maybe modern history but even then the government ( CIA ) hold back or change some information untill another generation where everyone involved is dead then the truth is reviled for example the moon scandal, you know how it was a fake ( filmed in a remote area ). If you knew that during that time you'd be killed.

@Emanzi: Whoa, dude, take it easy, you're stepping into crazy territory right there... =P
But to stay on topic, my two favorite cultures are Indian and Mayan, I love pretty much everything about them, except the ugly stuff such as human sacrifices... but I guess that was just natural for them.
I also love all this stuff about mythical civilizations, ufos, angels, etc. in fact, my own game is based on it, but I only see it as really really cool fiction… until proven otherwise of course. ;)

I read a fair share of Däniken when I was younger. I'm pretty sure I have a Däniken book hidden somewhere on my bookshelf too. Yup. There it is "The Gold of the Gods" by Erich von Däniken.
The worst thing about "blaming" old civilizations on outside influence such as aliens is that it completely disregard the human sense of inventivness. People 10 000 years ago weren't really all that different from people today. So why wouldn't they have been able to create all kinds of awesome shit without the help of some astronauts from space or some hyperadvanced civilization that taught them everything.
when did this become about conspiracy theories?
PS. the moon landing was not faked.
PSS. the technology needed to fake a moon landing is more complex than landing on the moon.

post=211373post=211342I'm also partial to the pre-roman british isles.
vikings
And local history of course. Which there isn't much knowledge about. Other than some vikings coming over and looting the place, though it isn't quite sure if it actually is the place they looted or if it is a completely different coast.
Ah the wonders of ancient history :D
I, being from Britain, can tell you that there is a lot of history from the period of "pre-roman" British isles. It just isn't shared with the world.
ATLANTIS WAS MADE UP BY PLATO. HE SAID IT IN HIS BOOK. ATLANTIS IS NOT REAL.
Anyway, I really liked the chaos of ancient Sumer and Canaan. The Assyrians coming in and buttfucking everybody and stacking up their heads was badass, too.

I know there's plenty on pre-roman British Isles, but there's virtually nothing about pre-Christian Finland.
(for a given value of plenty of course. Any information about events more than 2000 years ago will be considered plenty. And information about events 2000 years ago written 500 years later will still be considered plenty.
The lack of local history:
wikipedia
The Iron Age in Finland is considered to last from c.500 BCE until c.1150 AD when the Swedish Conquest of Finland was complete and written history in Finland (the Middle Ages) begins. There is no evidence of any form of writing in Finland, runes or otherwise, prior to the Swedish Conquest and all evidence regarding Finnish history prior to Swedish involvement is based on archaeological findings and the scant records of contemporaneous third parties.
@ alterego hahaha, yeah your right, never mind about that guys hehe....
Yeah...read too much sci-fi, but I still believe in aliens as much as the pope believes in god. We might both be wrong or right but whatever.
Ancient Japan was also sick, Samurai's, Ninjas, Honor, you know but those guys can be a bit too extreme at times such as suicide after failing to do ones duty e.t.c

Gypsies and their dog eating habbits.........KIDDING.
Every civilisation is outstanding, for me as a born and patriotic slav, I choose slavic roots. Sadly these days we abandoned those traditions and our beautiful culture for some retarted MTV, celebrities, fast foods...it makes me sick, I miss the old traditions, they made our families close, everyone was happier, everyone was more cheerfull, everyone was friendlier....

ALL OF THEM
but most recently, Sparta. I had to write about their social structure for a take-home midterm the other night and how their entire society is based around keeping the helots (farmer slaves) in check is crazy. They even had an undergroundish group of teenagers/young men called the krypteria act as assassins to kill the helots that leave their houses at night.

Not to mention that one holiday they have that equats to Kill Your Helot Day! And wasn't there some rule that you had to kill your Helot to become a man/soldier/something like that just so that they'd have a taste of killing before they do the real deal in battle?
The scottish and the french!
The hundred year wars and the scottish/english conflicts are fascinating stories.
