TORRENTS: DO YOU?

I pretty much download everything from games to tv shows, and especially subbed anime. I can get 1mb/s on good torrents. Yar what can I say? I be a pirate sailing the seven seeds.
Yeah, pretty much everyone is doing this now. Soon dvd's will probably become a thing of the past.
author=demondestiny link=topic=718.msg10391#msg10391 date=1205179942It's the 1mb/s part that will sink DVDs though. Not the pirate part of it. Digital downloads and streaming of films is becoming increasingly popular. This is what people say but I think they're forgetting that most DVD sales are impulse purchases picked up while doing other shopping. It will always remain profitable to sell packaged movies because people will always want to spot some old movie at WalMart for $5 and want to take it home and watch it that night. This is also true for videogames because not only are videogames sold the same way, but a lot of times people shopping for video games don't know ahead of time which one to buy and want to browse at a store and look at boxes and stuff.
But we're not very far away from being able to download movies as an impulsive buy. With wireless connections nearly everywhere and stuff like the iPhone I bet it won't take long until we see a commercial for a movie somewhere, whip out our portable music-player/video-player/phone/all-kinds-of-stuff press a couple of buttons a voilá, the movie is on your account. Being able to stream it on the portable device or, since you use the same account on your machine at home, being able to (for the same fee) stream or download it to your home TV.
Hell I'm sure it's even possible to do remote controlling. Buying the movie with your portable device through a couple of clicks and it starts downloading on your NotReallWiiConnect24 and ready for viewing when you get home.
The browse-and-buy model won't exactly go away. But it also applies to the digital world. I know I occasionally just browse around torrentsites looking for movies that might seem interesting. Or when I'm downloading music off some network I search for random words, looking for stuff that catches the eye.
The browse-and-buy is far inferior to tell-and-buy though. The one where some friend say "hey, I saw this movie you should really watch it, it's neat." In digital downloads the films are often tied to your account meaning that you probably won't be able to transfer the films over to friends. So when recommending a movie you can't just lend it away but they'll probably have to buy it. But again talking about a movie, whip out the portable device, search for the movie and a couple of clicks and it's on its way home to you.
Of course we're not yet quite there where it's that simple. But the fact is that this is what they're aiming for because to be honest they want stuff to be bought as much as possible as easily as possible.

Mostly games at the moment, but I've played with the streaming service with titles I downloaded through less legitimate means (Gurren Lagann looks great on a TV the way it was meant to be seen, by the way), and at this point the only benefit I see to physical media is that the DRM on it doesn't actively cripple you and make it to where when your system ultimately dies, you lose all your purchases too.author=Shinan link=topic=718.msg10407#msg10407 date=1205230058

I suppose I'm not the target audience you're talking about, though, because I don't think I've ever bought a DVD impulsively. Maybe that's because I only tend to buy TV series on DVD, though, meaning that they're much bigger purchases for me than for people who like owning movies.

Actually I have so many video game consoles it's embarassing and people come over for parties and are like WHY DID YOU BUY ALL OF THAT.

Well you're also forgetting that most people aren't nerds. Nerds like to sit and browse on the internet or whatever but normal people are too busy or too passive for that kind of stuff and would rather see something on a store shelf. Also, yes, DRM is ridiculous and I hope to god that downloadable content doesn't become standard because so far downloadable content is a crippled mess that leaves me feeling like I've paid for an overpriced rental and not actually bought something (PS your iTunes music store purchases self-destruct after being transported through three or more computers).

author=demondestiny link=topic=718.msg10603#msg10603 date=1205728483Not enough good games to warrant play on the GameCube... only games I found fun were the Resident Evils and Super Smash Bros, but I've played both so much, they're boring now.

Thats not true, there are a ton of games for the cube. It may be not as much as ps2, but the ps2's game selection consists of mainly single player games. Course someone had to break into my house and steal my gamecube (and I was so far into F-Zero GX too). I want a gamecube so badly right now and my ps2 fails to satisfy me. Though I'm just going to get a wii instead.
Anyway back on the topic of torrents. Don't know if this was mentioned but I find torrent speeds tend to go faster if you put the download/upload speed limit to a reasonable amount. From my understanding if you set them to "unlimited" the internet tries to hard and trips over it causing slower sppeds.
+What program do you use
uTorrent
+What kind of download speeds do you get
Between 1 and 600 kb/s
+Do you usually leave torrents to seed afterwards?
Yes, seed/leech ratio between 1:2 and 7:1
+Wha torrents site do you usually go to in order to find your torrents?
isohunt
