ACTIVE STAFF

Posts

I guess I figure the problem with 'organic' (which is good, don't get me wrong) can easily be interpreted as 'mess' once the pot gets big enough. Its not as though I want Staff to do stuff so members don't.

I've always felt that stuff like interviews, podcasts, magazines contests and the like are something that members can and have stepped up to the plate to do, and we're pretty good at that. I suppose it hasn't been happening lately, so its noticeable now, but that is true; we don't have to wait for the Staff to do that. Like I said before, my thing was more about the organization of the data that is already there; there are a shitload of games, blogs, userpages, and so on and so forth, and yeah, I could spend hours pouring through them and having a good time, but a 'Featured' or 'Most Popular' or 'Most Discussed' (of the week/day/whatever) section is a good idea I think of organizing and presenting what we generally already have.

I once again, do agree that user generated content like magazines and interviews and whatnot we can do ourselves and I don't imagine the Staff would have any problem pinning them up. If anyone will be on IRC later I'll hop on and further talk about it.
Most discussed reviews are right here

(Sorry, couldn't resist. More seriously, it sounds more like you want more/better search criteria, like searching # of posts or so. Exercise: How would you try to separate Alter Aela Genesis (most popular game right now) from others (pick a game from the front page "latest games to play") without any word of god solutions such as "Featured Games"? One idea is one could look on the reviews page and see recent reviews. 'Popular/Discussed' games tend to get reviews in clumps like AAG and Fable of Heroes.)

Well, no. What I'm suggesting is exactly what it says on the box; a list of 'Featured Games' (or something like it) directly on the homepage itself, akin to the Newgrounds example (I'm not suggesting we be like Newgrounds, nor is this idea unique to them either). Such an idea wouldn't come from what the Staff thinks is best, in fact, there wouldn't be anything subjective about it. The 'Most Popular Games/Blogs/Userpages' what have you would be selected directly from how many views/downloads/comments/whatever it had, it would be strictly by the numbers. It could be on a week to week basis so things can stay new for the users and the players.

As I think about it there probably should be something else to give exposure to the underdogs so they get exposure as well, so I'll think of an idea regarding that.
I suppose one thing I'll throw out there for people to chew on, and what TFT is saying, there is a difference between stuff being generated on the site (which occurs on the front page as we all can see) and people actually being excited and organized about funneling that activity for people to do stuff with. That 'buzz', so to speak. There's a difference between an active community and just a self perpetuating automaton.

All of this is not on the Staff's shoulders, but since the members of the Staff are the ones with the power to officially promote things and toy with the site, help would be appreciated.

I also never ever wanted to elevate certain individuals over others. There is 100% nothing special about the staff. The site never really even had staff because it was never the design to have one. As Karsuman stated before, this site was ultimately made so it would "just work". It could be entirely automated. There doesn't need to be a king on top dictating.
...

I agree, I didn't come here for all the noise and the articles and promotions. I actually stopped here when I clicked on it from Google because it had game pages. It was pretty much a special kind of blog made to archive games. I thought it was kind of weird.

After clicking around I thought "wait this site had a forum?". Forums and chats are nice, but you can't go anywhere with just a forum. But the forum posts under my game page are nice, it lets anyone give me feedback and it lets me be as transparent as possible during game development. Try getting this kind of instant feedback back in the 80s/90s. The best you could do is ask your end users to fill out response cards and mail them for great justice, and nobody did that anyway.

"There doesn't need to be a king on top dictating."

We already had you as our imperious leader~
I've always wanted to just do a braindump and this seems like a venue for that.

-ability to link to other games in a "If you liked this game, you may also like..." kind of format
-TABLE tags for tabular data
-A Completion Date field for gameprofiles
-ability to sort on Completion Date
-More podcasts
-Optional ability to add comments to custom game pages.
-a defect reporting system/integrated Help on gameprofiles
-A Screenshot tab at the top to replace the functionality that the Screenshot topics do. It would be similar to Blogs, but for screens. Although, I'm not sure if we could ever remove the screenshot topic entirely, because people still post screens for games that don't have profiles yet, and things like videos
-A revamped engines section? I remember when RMNv3 was still in development WIP wanted to have slick home pages for each engine. What if each game engine homepage looked like RMN's homepage, but filtered for that engine (and with maybe some extra info/content posted specific about that engine, like the Description)?
-polls
-send a notification to subscribers when the status changes (from Production to Completed, for example)
-a list of recent updates on a gameprofile itself, on its own tab.
-explain in a note somewhere how makerscore is calculated and what it is.
-indicate the roles of the developers on the game profiles (Lead, Dev, Tester, Other)
-add roles related to things like Music or Art
-game states (like Facebook statuses, but for games) to be used for "What Are You Working On?"-type oneline
-a list of users on RMN.
-a search for forum posts/comments
-what if we had the ability to share gameprofiles on sites like Digg or Facebook or MySpace or Twitter or whatever else people use these days? I've seen them used on other sites (mostly sites that post articles and blogs, like newspapers). Something like this could give a way for these anonymous visitors a way to share games they enjoyed and it could increase traffic to RMN.
-Playprofile incorporated into the user's profile, for listing things like Now Playing, Favorite Games, and Let's Trys and Let's Plays
-Impressions/Impression scores (http://rpgmaker.net/forums/topics/6898/ )
-Give official attention/support for other aspects of game development/showcasing, such as Story, Visual, Audio, Gameplay, Game Development
--on that line of though, Videos for gameprofiles
-Official indication that a game has been featured in the past somewhere on the gameprofile.
-Have a game's score be a true average of review scores, rather than truncated to the nearest .5
-merge various forum sections: Game Discussion & Development + Game Design & Theory, General + Videogames + Artistic License + Introductions. Leave Moronic because...well, we don't want that crap seeping into the rest of the site.
-The functionality of the forums really lends itself to discussion, and I think we can apply the same rules to the Blogs page to make them more accessible.
--Have Blogs move to the top of the list when a new post is made
--Have a timestamp and user listed for the Last Post
--Have categories for the various blog posts and allow users to select that category. My suggestions are: Game Design, Announcements, Progress Reports, and Miscellaneous.
--Make the blog page look more like the forum, with 4 groupings based on the categories
-What about implementing "Guest Blogs"? Wherein a member, who is not a creator or developer, requests the Lead for permission to start a Blog on their gameprofile, so that they can do things like Let's Try and Let's Play and....who knows? People are pretty creative.
-A way to filter Notifications by notification type

This is partly to show that, yes, we do discuss things behind the scenes, and partly to find out what people think of the ideas.

On that note, now that WIP has retired, we really don't have anyone to implement any of these ideas, so this is really just teasing.

Add find someone who is familiar with python and django and is willing to dive through piles of code to that list.

Ankylo didn't retire, so we are fine in that regard.

(although kars could stand to learn how to code!)
