I think I'll use VX for this one. I usually prefer XP, but for this one VX fits better. There is one problem though, VX doesn't have battlers for main characters since you don't see them in battle. It's a problem because you will be able to fight the other party members later for story reasons.
Use the YEM battle system here: http://wiki.pockethouse.com/index.php?title=Yanfly_Engine_Melody.
Thanks, I'll check it out.

There are battlers from SOME of the VX RTP characters in that page, perhaps you'll find them useful.

EDIT: Go to Material -> Newly Arrived Material
Just downloaded Metal Gear Lunacy of Legion and have been inspired to create a stealth game that would be along the lines of Final Fantasy 7 and Metal Gear Solid, with RPG Maker 2003 graphics of course. Going to be a huge project that has a custom menu system and a MerC system, where you can hire mercenaries of a specific class.

Also hope to have a system that relationships can develop between main characters and possibly even the mercenaries. MY FIRST GAME!

Hope to also use all custom sprites and chipsets. MAYBE???
Sounds a bit ambitious for your first game

LOL, yes indeed, maybe I should just stick to a smaller one and then work my way up.
maGOG - Working title.

Anyone have any tutorials for a grid based battle system in RPG Maker 2003? I have already started one but it sucks.

That is a very very good idea. Anything else probably won't be completed, and if this is your first time spriting, the quality won't be there either. Just focus on finishing a game.

I would be so
amazed if you actually finished this
You should really start from something smaller scale, JLSpencer. Trust me, even a veteran RMer woul have trouble with that.

Oh damn, this thing has already taken off? What am I doing sitting on my hands, I've got to get my game on the road.

To summarize the game as shortly as I can: You and your comrades get turned into fuzzy little animals by your enemy to eliminate the threat of standing in his way. On your quest you go through dungeons and fight dark mages of this enemy that have learned of this new magic in an attempt to gain more power through their orbs that they themselves use for transformation. As you defeat mages, you can choose to bind yourself with these orbs to change your appearance/strengths/weaknesses/skills (Megaman). After a while, the male hero and his female counterpart make their way to some special, magical place and obtain power from some divine force that turns them from their default dog and cat to a more humanoid version, therefore allowing you to buy equipment and items, and rest at inns without having to beg for kindness (whimper) from humans for a place to sleep. Though this helps significantly, it's not enough as you desire to become 100% human again.

Your entire quest is just a journey to change back into a human, but I hope that all the classes and unique atmosphere can carry this game through its slightly lacking storyline. I mean, I can't remember a single game that you spend at least half of it being unable to speak to anyone but other animals (most fluent with your own kind) and having to live off the land by killing monsters for food.

The main problem is trying to come up with a catchy name that doesn't make it sound like a comedy game while still remaining relevant to the overall experience.
That actually sounds quite fun! Beats my three soldiers attempting an assassination then becoming PoWs before escaping the games first dungeon and beginning a typical RPG adventure

I'm dropping out of this event. I'm having a hell of a time trying to figure out the best way to start this game, and I've already lost interest in the project overall.

Low attention span.
Ugh, I haven't even touched RM since I applied the David patch, which screwed up my RM2k3 program itself >>

You do realize it's WEEK ONE, right? We have six months.

Come on, you can't even say you tried if you're quitting now.

EDIT: Actually it's week two but still.

Low attention span.

That's hardly the issue here.

Come on, you can't even say you tried if you're quitting now.

The sad thing is that I've tried twice to make something interesting with this game (even just the intro), but here's the run down:

1. Prologue: No matter how I cut it, this has to be the two main heroes in a mysterious room of the enemy's fortress. They talk for about a second before the BBEG comes in and laughs. He brings one of his mages in to show the heroes their new magic. He transforms both of the heroes into their animal forms and teleports them back to their village. This intro is horrible, and leaves no sense of backstory or progression.

2. Interactive Intro (a.k.a "Your First Few Steps): With nothing shown at this point, there's little more that can be done here than say "We need to find a way to turn back into humans." and leave town with no direction.

3. Progression: Grind outside of town to get some food and levels before walking to the dungeon and forcing your way to the back. Once there, you confront your first overconfident mage who uses this orb to transform into *insert*. Upon his death, you get the orb and walk out of the dungeon to start on your way to the next dungeon. Since no human NPCs can speak to you about the world's troubles, and such things as cats and dogs know nothing more than what's going on at their owner's house, it's all up to you to complete your entire quest (or at least until you become somewhat human late in the game).

I can already foresee this project not having had enough thought put into it to follow through, such as Imaginative Reality, and remaking the battle chars and the old setup (which I deleted last night) will only discourage me further. I would make this project in 2k or VX (not sure about XP) to keep from having to worry about battle chars, but here's my problem with each.

2k: I'd have to event a sort of custom hero class for each different transformation (different stats per level).

VX: I'm a terrible mapper in this program, probably because of the blocky graphics. I may end up having to downgrade TfZ II to 2k3 due to this.

How I see it, it would be better to make a sequel to "Destiny Quest" than this for the Game Drive.
I think I know how to make the intro better: move it further into the game. It would make more sense if, say, the first third of the game you were humans, and you got to go across most of the world, while learning about it and your characters. THEN the mage transforms you into animals, and you trek across the same world from a much different perspective.

The change would be way more dramatic if the player felt like he changed as well. He's no longer playing as the humans he's used to, but animals instead. It just fosters a connection between the player and the characters.

Or you could make something else. I went through 3 game ideas before I wound up with Legends From Ledaiya.
I was just wondering, what if it's a game that you moved from 2k3 to another engine with a completely different story and stuff? Is that still passable?
