I'M ENLISTING FOR THE U.S. NAVY.

Posts

Cool stuff, man. Yeah, a buddy of mine was considering joining the military for the same reasons (mostly financial stuff), but he didn't end up getting in because he has asthma, which is basically an automatic no. Not sure if that would be true with the navy too. Anyway, I'm sure it'll be a good experience. Also, all of these naval experiences will probably help you better understand the military, which might be useful when writing your game (since a majority of your game is about military and political strife).

Good luck, bro!

i would join the airforce (stargate program)

I've been thinking about joining the military for some time now, but I'm not sure if it's for me. I mean, I don't think I can handle the pressure so well..
Good luck and hopefully you'll get better results from this!
Yeah, I hope you don't die. I also hope you don't decide that it's "honorable" to steal someones life. Then you'll just join the ranks of everyone else who sickens me.

Yeah, I hope you don't become one of the undead. I also hope you don't decide that it's "honorable" to become a vampire and steal someones life. Then you'll just join the ranks of everyone else who CAN TURN INTO A BAT.

you were saying
Well, Feld is a good guy anyways. I seriously doubt he'd be the kind of guy who would like killing people just because the government told him to.
You need to listen less to this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InBXu-iY7cw

You can always leave the country, you dont need to enlist to the military.

I like you, MOG. Do what you must, but come back from boot camp in one piece!

I'll be sure to leave lots of annoying messages about Chronology on your wall. (You should get a notebook dedicated solely to designing the most amazing RPG epic while you're out. You have great ideas; it'd be a shame to lock them up for four years!)
Good luck Feld. Just make sure to learn your knowledge (chain of command and orders to the sentry) as quickly as possible. Pushing because you messed up one word in the 6th order is NOT fun. You can never really be prepared for BT so all I can say is good luck and come back to the States alive.
My father once told me that if I joined the army, he'd break my legs.

I should consider enlisting as well; how much worse can it be from the humiliating and unrewarding technician work I do now?
Good luck. Broke medical student...yeah, I know the feeling all too well... :-\

Best wishes...we don't know each other very well(or as well as I would have liked) but you'll be missed.
Which career field are you enlisting as? Most of the sailors I work with are CTTs.

No I don't want to ever kill someone. However I've never really heard of anyone in the Navy entering combat for any reason, and I'm not badass enough to become a Navy SEAL. So I think I'll be fine on that front. However I mean no disrespect to our combat troops like the Marines/Army dudes.

Okay give me the money to do that.

Like I said, don't worry, life in the military isn't restrictive to pursuing personal hobbies, the only time I won't have access to a computer is when I'm working, or I'm on a ship with restricted access. Other than that I'll lead a relatively normal life, computer and video games and meathead working out and all. I'll still be pumping out games and contributing, plus with the added benefit of professional security and personal development and not having to worry about starving does wonders for the imagination.

Thanks for the well wishes so far everyone. If anyone else is curious about the military or considering joining, why not ask someone currently in the military? I know a ton of people from all of the branches, and while firsthand experience is the best teacher, the overall opinion I'm getting is that while it's culture shock and hard work, the experience is a blast and you get to do stuff and go places that's nothing short of incredible that you'd never get to do in your civilian life.

I haven't really talked to anyone yet that's regretted their service. It seems to be what you make of it.

<-- This guy, but I'm the kind of person who's more likely to do the opposite of what I'm told so the service hasn't been very compatible with my personality. It hasn't been all bad. My stack of disciplinary paperwork is still smaller than my pile of accolades. If I were a lesser analyst I would've been discharged a long time ago.
What branch are you in? Is there anything you can tell me about how the day to day lifestyle is and how much you get to do/free time?

I actually rewatched that movie for the 50th time a few days ago. At least DIs aren't allowed to touch you now.

From what I hear though Navy boot camp is a piece of cake. Even modern Marine BC isn't as tough as it was in that movie (which took place in the Vietnam War)

Kind of sad that the state of America is such that people wishing to lead intellectual lifestyles and become educated professionals are forced to resort to completely unrelated martial career paths in order to avoid complete destitution.

Holy hell, Ciel started a sentence with a capital letter.

On a more related note, I wish you the best of luck, homie.

My dad was in the National Guard and I believe he had a great deal of free time while he was deployed in Kosovo. He and his friends all had Xbox 360s and shit.

US Air Force. I can't tell you about life on a ship, but the sailors I work with have a comparable lifestyle to my own when not deployed. We work twelve hour shifts but only work 14 days out of a 28 day period, which is a pretty great deal. That's just us, though. Most people work 0730-1630 on Monday through Friday and a lot of units allow you to cut out early to go to the gym. If ship deployments are anything like Air Force deployments, you'll work twelve hour shifts every day, but time flies and you'll be home before you know it.

When you're not at work it's almost like not being in the military at all for the most part... You just need to keep in mind that whatever kinds of trouble you get into on your off-time will also get you in trouble with the military. My nose is pretty clean in that regard so I have no issues.

The pay is kind of shitty, but I also made a lot more money before I enlisted so my perspective is skewed. If I were to separate I'd have to make about $55,000 to maintain the same lifestyle and benefits in the Denver area. I've been in for over 4.5 years and am an E-5 so you won't get that kind of paycheck for awhile.

You should definitely not get it in your head that you'll never deploy to a dangerous area. It's what you've signed up for. You can never fully predict when another serious war will break out, and even in today's Afghanistan conflict there are no guarantees. It was only a few months ago when two sailors were killed out in eastern Afghanistan, and they weren't SEALs, they were a cook and a plumber. Hell, I'm in the Chair Force and still did a Weapons Intelligence Team deployment to Iraq where I had to sit behind a .50 cal.
