You need to listen less to this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InBXu-iY7cw

Ontopic:
You can always leave the country, you dont need to enlist to the military.
kentona, I am disappoint. :|

(I scanned through the thread looking for imbedded youtube videos, or the mention of the Village People or In The Navy, derp)
This is totally the best version of that song.

So I decided to skip all that bullshit and go straight for the most secure job in the country; the U.S. military. The benefits? A steady, guaranteed biweekly paycheck (making far more than many of my peers), free health and dental insurance, the costs, and my current debt, of college totally covered (and the ability to still get my college degree while serving), more or less free food, great vacation time, housing covered, utilities covered, and the added bonus of having a military background is great for job searching when I get out in four years.

Shit, this almost makes me want to join the navy.

But all jokes aside, one of my best friends enlisted in the navy a year or so after high school and it's definitely changed him a lot (mostly positive changes, but he has gotten somewhat arrogant over the years). But in any case, he's having the time of his life right now doing things that most people won't ever get the chance to experience, so best of luck to you.
They give you and your family benefits for serving in the military, I should know. Here's hoping you come back in 4 years a better person without experiences that will haunt you for the rest of your life.

At least in the navy you get this thing:

you're enlistin for a fistin
I actually tried to enlist upon graduating from high school, but due to flat feet and very poor vision the only branch that would've taken me is the Army, and fuck that. Plus I'm fairly stable financially. But good luck! Soon you'll be General Mog.

There are no generals in the US Navy. Admiral sounds cooler anyway.

She's an NPC.

I'd rather be the hero, or the staff chick.
I'm going in, too. Just gotta get a semester in at the local community college and it's off to enlist.

My stepfather is a sailor, too; I can't say we aren't anything less than well off.

how did i not respond to this sooner
update, homies

So guys, I got sworn in about a week and a half ago. They say I'm leaving Jan. 25th, but it might be different if I can get in this paperwork to get my job in the Navy changed (I don't like the one I was assigned). How about I fill you guys in.

Anyone who ever considering going into the military; good luck.

The Military Entrance Processing Station, otherwise known as MEPS, is really something. In a nutshell

These stations process applicants for military service, putting them through a battery of tests and examinations to ensure that they meet the standards required to serve in the United States Armed Forces. These tests include vision, hearing, blood, and blood pressure tests, a pregnancy test (for women), an examination by a doctor, a height and weight check, urinalysis, a breathalyzer test, a moral/background examination, as well as the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB). If applicants are deemed qualified for military service, they will also meet with a service counselor, negotiate and sign enlistment contracts, and swear an entrance oath

In laymens terms, that means, at least in today's world, that so many people are looking to join the military, your chances of actually being selected is statistically about 30%, or 3/10, because they're getting a lot stricter on the medical, moral, psychological (emphasis on this), and legal requirements and a lot of people wash out. Or so they tell me. One thing I do know, though, if you so much as even have flat feet, you'd be lucky if the doctor lets you slide. They were really strict on the medical requirements, and those doctors were really grilling everyone.

Prepare for about a day of academic testing, and for the next day, 10 or so hours (starting at 4 am in the morning) of getting pricked, prodded, tested, interviewed, stretched, and peeing in bottles to see if you have what it takes to be in the modern military. The guys had to line in a room in our boxers and do a bunch of stretches and maneuvers to see if we could do them in a combat setting. I hear the girls had to do something similar, except they were butt naked. So I hope you're not bashful, either.

I was sworn in that afternoon, but damn, is MEPS tiring. Luckily I don't have to do that ever again (I have to do a bite sized version right before I leave for Boot, but nothing major). Granted it wasn't too bad; I mean, if I was adverse to uncomfortable situations, I have no business joining the military, but JEEZ.

Also feel free to ask me absolutely anything.
Looks like I have to get in better shape :(

I'm not too bad off, but I'm on the flabby side of the line. Not a little bit, but not plenty, either.
Hmmm... My academic testing didn't take a full day. Actually, I did everything for my enlistment in a single day. ASVAB is only about 20 minutes long provided you're not a mouthbreather. Math test (optional) was only about ten minutes. DLAB (language proficiency, optional) was maybe 20 minutes, I forget... It was the only test that's not at your own pace, but at the pace of the audio playback.
