Hmmm... My academic testing didn't take a full day. Actually, I did everything for my enlistment in a single day. ASVAB is only about 20 minutes long provided you're not a mouthbreather. Math test (optional) was only about ten minutes. DLAB (language proficiency, optional) was maybe 20 minutes, I forget... It was the only test that's not at your own pace, but at the pace of the audio playback.

When did you take these tests? Maybe they've had to raise the standards due to the liquid shit economy sending desperate young men in droves to the army.

Heh, maybe this whole crash was a plot by the government in order to increase enlistment.[/s[

NB: Tight, that's why the standards are so high.

I never took the ASVAB in high school. I pulled out a calculator and my math homework instead. Two military hunks stood behind me, breathing down my neck for a few minutes. Eventually, a guidance counselor came over and I told her that I had a study hall this period and that I found doing my work for school more important than testing to see how badly the government wants me to get shot at.

I got to go to study hall, and I still find it amusing that a scrawny woman was the one to confront me, and not the two muscular, imposing men.

...man, I never really respected my school. I was always the kid who spoke against mini-funerals for dead kids because, well, when you're sixteen and drunk and driving and you die it's not my fault you're a fucking idiot.

GOOD LUCK MOG

I expect pictures of you in uniform.
I was forced to take the ASVAB in high school, scored a 90, and the Navy called me for WEEKS.
The army called me once, I told them I have problems with authority, the recruiter replied "They make our best leaders". I am not exaggerating.

I was thinking about joining the Australian army once I finished school, but I doubt I'll get in. I have a horrific record (2 suspensions, incredibly bad temper, problems with authority), poor eyesight and my family has a history of asthma.

Kinda glad I don't live in the US. :)

Hell, they even called me 4 and a half years later. "Hey, your scores are about to expire...are you SURE you don't want to join the nuclear division? It's exclusive! Come on in, we'll talk about it." The recruiters just happened to have brought in their hot foreign wives, that day...wives that do anything and everything they wanted, as they were sure to tell me.

Didn't work...though if I don't find a way to pay for med school next year, I might reconsider, lol.

The test itself didn't take long. It was just late in the day, so I had to stay in a hotel and wait until the next morning to finish MEPS.

Also as far as standards go, NB, I doubt the test content has changed, but from everything I've heard and have been told, the standards have. The military nowadays is, as far as people's perceptions go, no longer the last option for stupid people, but it's getting more and more selective and the bar is being raised to something a LOT of people aren't cut for, and I just don't mean some sort of 'hooah' type toughness either. A lot of people try to get in the door for the many benefits it has, but don't make it. Like I said before, nowadays you're just straight up lucky to get in at all, some factors depending. Some dumbfucks and bums slide in through the door, but of course that's with anything.

Like geodude said, this sounds about right. One of the first things I learned in my DEP classes is that the last thing the military wants or needs is some ass kissing follower yes man and to not be any of those if you want to see a promotion ever.

Don't kid yourself. There isn't much room for thinkers in the enlisted military. They'll train you to push buttons according to a checklist. You'll have to find an O to corrupt with your ideas if you want to make anything interesting happen.
I was referring more to the officer side of the equation, but I dunno, I've heard some interesting stories from some military folk. I guess your mileage may vary? I don't mind either way; as long as I do my job, get paid, live life, and still get what I need to do done it's fine as any other job. I've heard all sorts of stories from the military and the impression I'm getting that it is what you make of it.

Your mileage will be the worst of all. The class separation in the Navy is the most distinct by far.

Even then it will still be dependent on your job... If you're just some guy who loads an F/A-18 up with GBU-38s, it doesn't matter what you think--you're just a worker bee and finding a way to load ordnance five seconds faster isn't going to change the way we fight wars.
Your mileage will be the worst of all.

No, I mean overall. I've heard some people in the Navy (or the military in general) say its the worst experience ever and all that, and other people in the Navy (or military in general) say its the best thing they've ever done.

As far as what you're referring to; I'd hardly call myself a follower, but in terms of doing a job, I don't really have problems with following orders as long as I get my pay and my perks within reasonable margins of variation. I'm taking it as it comes; if I'm ever meant to change the world, I'll do it as I'm able; I'm not out to jump in the fray looking for a gold star as a grunt or anything. Having people above me in the food chain doesn't matter one bit if I have the same opportunity to rise in it as they do; God knows that I'm as intelligent and able as anyone else.

There's a time and place for leadership and being important and I'll get there when I get there.
