STEAM GAMES ON SALE - LAST DAY TODAY, NOV 29TH!

Steam can also easily run in offline mode - so there goes the whole "I NEED TO BE ONLINE" shtick.
I still need to run the arguably obnoxious client, but I'm the minority.
Got Steam, saved tons on games, much better library than any local store ever could with much better and frequent sales that I can check out and purchase with maximum convenience. Offline mode lets me play my games without an internet connection for longer than I've ever been without one and I can install games on any computer without caring about where the game is. All I need is the Steam client, an internet connection (with sufficient bandwidth which is looking to be a bigger issue thanks to ISP bullshit) username, and password. Played games I never would've considered or even known about because sales hit my magic number of "fuck it why not".
tl;dr Steam is an awesome PC game store and distributor. Having to deal with steam to play games isn't ideal but the auto updater is great (fuck you paradox and your damn beta patches) and going through steam isn't a burden for me.
Thank god the shitty DRM from way back is dead. Fuck that shit

Steam takes so little resources, I can't even imagine where these complaints are coming from. Have you used steam recently? The Steam launch was a disaster; but it's gotten much better since then.
It's not so much the resources so much as it is the idea: I have the actual files for Recettear here on my HDD, why do I need to run Steam before I can enjoy Recettear?
But like I said, I'm in the minority when it comes to being annoyed by the client. I do like Steam's pricing, though.

I'd personally love for Steam to take the GOG approach of "buy game, get installer that you can redownload, cut out middleman" with an updater. It's totally a pipe dream though and I'll throw it with other great ideas like "developers realizing that gamepads exist (and all the inputs they have, I've only seen one game actually support all of my gamepad buttons)" and "quit making shitty console ports to PC" :(
*edit*
Gamersgate does something like this too iirc but it hates receiving my money and the store interface isn't as nice :((

I didn't like steam because my brother and I would share games. We've been doing this for the past 10 years. When I look at my collection of games (oldies like Baulders gate, or newer ones like Fallout 3) I love taking solace in the fact it's a game I did not illegally download, but I can still to this very day install it on any one of my computers without worry.
Steam on the other hand can manage multiple computers, but its still tied to one damn account. And if the account is in use on one computer you can't play games on another.
Steam is a godsend, a perfect reality for single and lonely PC gamers. I has friends and family who like sharing the games that we buy. Too bad steam can't share the same games across the family members. Too bad that when my brother buys a steam game only he can play it and if were lucky we *could* take turns at one lonely time interval after another.
I know playing like CoD on two computers after buying it once may seem like I got more than my monies worth, but I'm talking about a twin brother. I don't want to multiply my money output just because we like the same games? It had never been this way before. and I know multiplayer changes the experience, but Fallout: NV is a single player game. I liked installing Fallout 3 on my computer and my brothers computer and then for us just playing at whenever time regardless if the time was the same or not. We didn't *have* to worry about steam accounts, but Fallout NV, unless there's a way to disable steam for it, I don't think we'll ever get to play together unless I throw down more money for the convenience.
I don't know about you, but I grew up in a household where I had one disk for a game per family. Not 3 or 4 depending on how many family members like the game. What if I look at my Baulders Gate collection and saw I had 4 boxes of that game? One for a different family member because that's how steam works, right? This is so wrong. I wouldn't mind if steam introduced account sharing for like families and shit.
Oh and steam accounts aren't usually "idle", or at least my brothers. I know that I can use his account whenever he's not using it on any computer, but not if he's already playing/downloading/browsing a game. Which is surprisingly quite often. And so surprisingly we now have games that can't be used while other games are being played/browsed/downloaded by someone else.
Say my brother has games 1-6 and he's using game 3, that means games 1, 2 and 4, 5, 6 can't be used on another computer (by me for example) including game 3. And what if game 4 I really wanted to play, and it was on his account because he also really wanted to play it. I'm not gonna re-purchase the game for myself just to play it while he's doing some other game. Fallout NV again comes to my mind. While I can touch the box-art for the game, I still can't play it even though my brothers playing CoD Black ops.

i have a workaround for steam sucking (for all the reasons you just mentioned, radnen)
i just don't play new games. or if i really must, i get them sans-steam. i bought the Humble Indie Bundle so i could get Braid without Steam.
in general, as multiplayer stuff goes, invite your damn friends over and plug a console in. B)
