Well hi people I'm new to this forum never even seen it before til today but I was looking up tutorials for rpg maker 2003 I've been toying with rpg maker 2k,2k3,xp, and vx for about 6 years now never really made a real game with it but I'm starting to want to again.
I've written a basic storyline and have got most of the spriting I want for it done theres one question I've been asking myself though.
Do I do it in 2k3 or VX? I like both of these but I want a Side View Battle System tlike 2k3 has but I also want Icons for Skills and Items and what not like VX has.
I figure putting icons into 2k3 would be easier than putting a side view battle system into VX because I don't know the first thing about scripting in ruby but I can manage to do almost anything with events.
But I can't find a way to put Icons in can anyone help me out?

You should definitely use VX. If you want a sideview battle system, use Yanfly's Melody scripts: http://wiki.pockethouse.com/index.php?title=Battle_Engine_Melody
All the info on how to use them should be on the page.

Thanks thats perfect for me didn't even know that existed. Thanks Lennon.
Now I just gotta find me a 8 directional rmvx template to sprite on. :)
EDIT : Well I've been toying with Yanfly Engine Melody for a bit now and am getting a basic grasp of it. But I've run into a problem. I cannot for the life of me figure out a safe way to add my own icons to this iconset. I opened it up from the system folder with MS Paint but when I did there were strange gradients behind several icons black squares behind icons and weird shapes behind the weapons.
So I thought it was a little strange but like I said I'm new to scripts so I added a few icons to it saved it and loaded the game it came up with an iconset.png error so i was like damn I messed it up so I just deleted the whole thing off my computer redownloaded it and came here. Can anyone help me out or tell me what I'm doing wrong?
Anyways instead of me ranting heres exactly what it did when I opened it up with paint....

Don't use paint, it can mess with some .pngs for some reason. I get the same issue with tilesets sometimes. Edit them with another program.
Download Paint.NET! http://www.getpaint.net/
Free easy to use image editing software.

Paint doesn't support alpha channels (aka transparencies) which is a part of PNG files. You should use a program like Paint.net or GIMP, they're free image editors with some teeth that work properly with PNGs and alpha channels.
