FAVORITE DUNGEON MUSIC GO.

It doesn't necessarily have to be from an RPG, but the only rule is that it has to be a dungeon. No town music, character themes, boss battle music, or whatever if it isn't also a dungeon theme. Explain why as well for bonus points.

Also if you're going to Youtube them in, be mindful not to do too many at a time.

The Desert of Death (Breath of Fire III)

A lot of people hated the desert in BoF III, but I love it. I mean, sometimes it's a pain in the ass, but as a whole I love it. Not only is the 'dungeon' itself unconventional (you have to actually navigate through the desert over several days using nothing but the stars as your guide, making sure only to move at night, occasionally being played by mirages, and being careful not to die of thirst), but the music is incredible. It really gets that 'long trek through the god damn desert' feel down, and yes, the wind is a part of the actual track. The occasional 'fade out' effect the song does to bring out the wind is also amazing.

The only bad part is that the directions the game gives you are are fucking dead wrong. The guy who initially gives you the directions is correct, but the piece of paper you can consult in your party's camp in the actual desert are dead wrong and will lead you nowhere. What the hell, Capcom?

Ultimate Weapon (Saga Frontier, T260G's scenario)

Like most tracks in the Saga series, Kenji Ito is a master at making tracks fit what the hell is going on. I don't know how they do this. Do they make the composers play through the game to get a feel on how to compose the tracks?

Anyway, this song makes me want to log into the Matrix and kick some asses Blade Runner style or some shit. Given that T260's scenario, and Saga Frontier as a whole, really, has a lot of some weird, cyberpunk 80s anime mish mash thing going on with it, I can't complain with this song, or any of the music in the game, really.

now thats funky enough to slay some demons too
Ugh, oh man. I'm just gonna say this.. I didn't think any of the music in BoF3 was very great. I mean it worked for the game I suppose, but I honestly thought that was one of the lesser attributes of the game itself. Personal opinion.

I've never really thought of a specific dungeon track as a favorite, but Chrono Trigger had some good ones.

I love the transition between smooth keys and bass to a deep thumping rhythm, and then back to a quiet calm dwindling melody.

The Ocean Palace is the first time in the game I always feel the heroes are way in over their heads. The music keeps building up the tension for the scene with Crono, Lavos and the queen, probably the most dramatic scene in the entire game. Amazing track.

This track from Suikoden II, a game I haven't played in years and years, still reminds me of barely getting past some of these dungeons. I don't believe I ever finished this game either.

Maybe it's just nostalgia at work, but this song from Secret of Mana holds a special place in my heart. Almost brings me to tears to be honest.
Professor Layton Unwound Future spoilers (kinda)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mh0Ba9-qo1A As the only thing I would compare to a dungeon in the entire game, this place was pretty cool anyway. But this background music was just perfect for it and really captures the whole essence of the scene. Of course this might be a favorite because it was in what is in my opinion one of the best endings to anything ever.

First one I remembered.

yes every soundtrack should use synthetic slap bass-like sound as lavishly as soul blazer
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbwx0Gvxl5w (soul blazer - ice fields of laynole)

this tune would be pure magic to me if i hadn't spent so much time lost in that damn jungle

i'm not really a sakuraba fan but he has done some fine work and here it is

i always feel a little unoriginal posting final fantasy tunes. but
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QutVILpq3dY (final fantasy 7 - mako reactor)

i think this really captures that rousing "this is it let's go fight the final boss" feel, even though you fight it (er, them) five minutes into the game

Kefka's Tower

Yay. You knew it was the final dungeon just by listening to the music.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UngtxMQDKnI&feature=related

Fine music from a game almost nobody played.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENN-AhW1QNI&feature=related

More fine music from game nobody played, and another final dungeon theme. The theme just fit perfectly as you urgently descended and navigated the ruinous corridors of this place.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6xnhLTNsYjc (Wild Arms 5)
Even without Naruke, I think this is the best soundtrack next to the first game. It's very, very good.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gS19rrW3HS8 (Wild Arms 5)
seriously.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NuSQoWzjRL4 (Brave Fencer Musashi)
This game had a great soundtrack. It wasn't that good of a game, though.

Venus Lighthouse, Black Omen/Undersea Palace, and the Lufia song are ones I also would have mentioned.
Final Fantasy IX had some great dungeon music. My two favourites:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FF7e7ptu0yU - Very fitting for the creepiest dungeon in the game.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNKo924QhVs - Volcanoes are great fun, aren't they? (Apparently this is a remix of a Final Fantasy I track)

Terranigma also had its share of awesome dungeon music, although I can't say I liked the game that much.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vqLjeeHxZM - Beruga's lab! You know, now that I think about it, the bad guy from The Incredibles is a complete rip-off of Beruga
down to the way he meets his demise
Magus' Castle

I like how the battle music doesn't interrupt it. Also oceanpalace.mid

So peaceful, and the dungeon itself was both minimalistic and quite pretty. It is, well, a giant limestone cave in which you're driving gigantic robots. It was a nice change of pace from a busy arena/factory/junkyard with sirens and the intercom going off. The dungeon even has an unlockable optional dungeon inside it, with some really good puzzles and Gnosis to kill!

Lots of different feelings make up the parts of this theme, the Disc One Final Dungeon where you encounter Dhoulmagus. It's both horrifying and wicked, much like the man you've been chasing. It incorporates some of his darkness, some of his jester/Kefka-esque maniacal nature, and some of his creeptastic stalking.

EDIT: That BoFIII desert theme is pretty cool.

EDIT2:

I'm not sure if Storm Eagle's level quite fits as a dungeon, but here it is anyway. it's megaman. it's rad.

At this point in Chrono Cross, you're exploring what is essentially a ghost city that is a amalgamation of different timelines and dimensions. You are alone in more than one dead world, but I only really felt alone because of this song. All of the music in this game, save for perhaps the main battle theme, is really good.

The pace of this song may seem strange if you haven't played Ys, which is a very high speed slash and hack game. nothing else to say except it rawks

Agreed, especially Black Omen. Also Fortress of Ancient Dragons from Chrono Cross, and at the risk of being cliche, Ultimecia's Castle hellz yeah

How about music when checking out a tower? Checking out an ancient and half busted tower haunted by the immortal ghost of the dragon knight that used to rule the valley ages ago because you need to have a chat with him. It has a fucking violen solo. *edit*misremembered, not quite a violen solo*/edit*

The other cool D2 dungeon themes aren't on youtube :(

Here's a final dungeon theme: Eggmanland! Robotnik Eggman's been planning this since the start of the game and now he's done and is ready to bring Evil Plot to Defeat Sonic and Take Over the World #8672 to fruition! This music is all about Robotnik Eggman, his army of robots, his giant boss machines, and it being time to fuck up his plans.

Eggmanland is long. Too long. Long enough that you'll be switching Day and Night to complete different segments of the stage.

Welcome to the Underworld! Funny enough, I never played PSO4 but I think the music goes great with the Ultima 5 Underworld. A new vast unexplored land that you reached after another dungeon and it's huge and fucking dangerous. There's tons to explore and the layout is much different than what you've seen before (being underground and all) but far more lethal with dangerous and large groups of enemies abound and the underground terrain is not helping at all (lava, poison swamps, and a black out zone oh my!).

Then the Underworld kicks it up another notch.
A very catchy dungeon theme.(YS: Ark of Napishtim)

I always found myself listening to Chronopolis a lot too.

Somewhat of a dungeon theme...ish thing.
