VXP CHAIN GAME
Posts
I really don't think we need two chain games running side-by-side, even if they are other makers. How about we see how the first one works out, and then maybe something will happen.
author=CrazeWhat are people's thoughts on this? I mean it would make our chain game better in the end, but on the other hand it'll be months before the 2k3 game is finished(if it ever is).

Well imo those that prefer vx over 2k3 would probably be alienated from the other chain game anyway.
Just try and see how many people you could get into this chaingame that aren't in the 2k3 one, then lets talk. :V

My computer is a bitch, so it refuses to run RM2k3 games anyway. If I were to join a chain game it'd be this one.
I'm more familiar with XP in terms of mapping and use but even though VX has the stupidly limited map editor it can be worked around. Code wise XP is the greatest pain in the ass, because unless we get a RGSS coder to build what we want from the ground up, some code is going to have conflicts. It's really hard to balance scripts in XP because there are so many different authors with varying levels of skill.

I'll join in an XP chain game. I'll gladly help out with any scripting that needs to be done, as well. I find XP's scripting system a breeze to work with.

I just did a count, and it seems it's 5-all on the VX vs. XP issue. There a few people that can either way too, and other people who might be interested that haven't spoken up, so I'm sure there's enough interest to get this running.
I'd just like to ask why scripting is being raised as an issue so often here. Are we really going to load up a community game with scripts? I mean, just because you can doesn't mean you should, especially for the sake of everyone being able to work with the engine.

Because scripting is a resource at our disposal just like graphics and audio, so why not take advantage of it? Don't add scripted features for the sake of adding scripted features, but if it improves the game, then it'd be silly to ignore that avenue.
I'm more familiar with XP in terms of mapping and use but even though VX has the stupidly limited map editor it can be worked around.Question is, would the people involved in this chain game want to work around it? I'm sure not everyone likes the idea of SwapXT or parallax mapping.

It's really hard to balance scripts in XP because there are so many different authors with varying levels of skill. It's actually the same in RMVX as well. Any two scripts that modify the same area of code will have a possibility of conflicting. Neither XP nor VX are better or worse in this regard.
I'd just like to ask why scripting is being raised as an issue so often here.RMVX clearly has an advantage in the way RGSS2's code is structured as opposed to XP and RGSS1's. I'm guessing this is why scripting is brought up.
Okay, o this has gone pretty stagnant, and the issue's pretty evenly split. I'm just going to call it now and say that we're using XP. It has easier mapping, and although it doesn't have quite the same ease of use script-wise, there are still plenty of scripts available. The VX people are obviously free to make their own project, and join in this one if they have XP.
I'll make another thread soon-ish. For now continue discussion in here.

Hurray, I'm in.
I believe that we should avoid haphazardly adding scripts into the project. Rather, I think we should settle on a design and then decide what aspects of the design should be evented versus scripted and then either find scripts to match or to write our own.

Yeah that's a pretty good plan. Planning out our functions and our final goal will be easier than just jumping in and going HEY THAT LOOKS NEAT.
What are we doing on the graphics, then? There are a few different things we can work with but in general we're going to need to do a number of tile edits, unless we work with the RTP (which can look good).

I agree. So, let's start story brain-storming! (A "collect the x thingamabobs" would probably be best here but the other guys are doing that so I don't know how you guys'd feel about that)
author=SorceressKyrstyUnless someone has some grand inspiration, I feel that the XP RTPis nice and simple to work with, and fairly versatile.

Thoughts anyone? I want to keep this a community thing, which is why I don't want to make too many big decisions, but I need some input to do that.
I'm so out of the XP scene, I don't even know what script or graphics libraries are around :(
The only issue I've had with the XP RTP graphics is the lack of a world map but I don't think one would be appropriate for a chain game (or we could use TheInquisitor's world map, I've still got it somewhere. I might have his inner graphics too, but I'd have to check)
For a plot, a collectathon works but that's the same thing being done with the 2k3 chain game. We could add a spin on it (Defeat the EightRobot Masters Dragons!) or go for less direction and have the plot go whereever the chain game takes it!
