And Essence falls in the latter category.
I don't know if this is all a good thing or a bad thing o_o but I'll give you my reasons for calling my game FF.

To me, FF died right at FF10 and A LOT of FF fans feel the same way. With Essence, what I'm trying to do is bring back the magic that was in the first 9 games... which I do hope people enjoy. I want to do something Square would do back in the 90's. Sure I'll make an original game sometime down the line but I want to create something of my own original ideas, but clip them to something that also already exists. A Final Fantasy game isn't made from chocobos, moogles, even the music. It's the feel, story, emotion, gameplay, characters that make a Final Fantasy what it is and I'm trying to fulfill that.

Fixed that for you. Without the common FF tropes, it's really not an FF game. It's just a Square RPG.

Seriously, there really isn't a reason for there to be "Final Fantasy" in your title. Just call it "Essence" for a while and see how it jives. You can create an homage to something without directly referencing it in the name.
Final Fantasy 1?

No moogles, chocobos or anything like that and it's still considered a FF and not an ordinary RPG. And it ain't going to kill you to see Final Fantasy in my title. There is nothing in this world that can make you change the title. I have many followers who want to see a FF game. Plus I have a 100% complete FF system done by Atoa. It's too late. People just need to get over hating fan games.

I'm not hating on it or anything. I just fail to see the point of it is all.

I remember a game created by a group called FireBell back in the day. They called their game DreamQuest, but it was essentially final fantasy. Same type of battle system, similar graphics, many of the same sounds. But it wasn't FF, it was DreamQuest.

I don't know. Something just kind of irks me about someone who willingly propogates their game as a direct counterpart of the series instead of portrayed as a tribute to the series. It's an ethical thing.

But you're right. Do what you will!
I know you're not bashing lol It's hard to judge tone in talk in text. BUT I will have similarities to the FF. I mean I will make an original game with 100% original everything and probably sell whatever it will be. I just want to do this for the fans is all. It has plenty to do with FF (story wise, character wise, moogles, summons, chocobos etc)

Another thing that bothers me about it. It's a shameful marketing device. Do it for the fans, or do it so the fans will play it?

Plagiarism matters at least a little bit, doesn't it? Even if it's free?
Do it for the fans. I'm not doing it so the fans will play it. People will play my game nonetheless just because of the flashy graphics (I'm not intending it to be that way, but it's going to happen).

Also, if you haven't noticed: Final Fantasy Essence is a play on words. It was intended to be that way.

I like Celes' idea, because it is a very similar goal to what Kentona did with Hero's Realm; trying to capture a form of nostalgia. I also have nothing *inherently* against a fan game - it just needs to make sense to call it that. It's not like she's making an unrelated project and calling it FF:Essence just because it sounds nice and is an RPG.

(Final Fantasy 1 is almost never, ever cited as a 'classic' FF. Yes, it was the first, but the legacy of the series itself has been built around the subsequent games and their evolution.)

Much like the first Zelda game, the first Final Fantasy wasn't actually that good. I have no idea how such a successful franchise managed to spawn from it.

You're crazy if you think those games aren't good. Consider the context my friend. It was like, what, 1987?
The first Final Fantasy gives me the same creepy bad feeling as the Wild ARMS 1 ost / monsters. (Not saying they're bad, they're awesome. But I feel unfomfortable.)

Anyways, Celes is trying to create something we, FF fans, urge for: A new fantasy we can play an enjoy that isn't all about smexy baschltier couples. (not that they're bad at all.)
(any couple like tha in your game?)

...

...We long for another "final fantasy" that feels a bit orthodox. ie.that's got the 2D thing going on, that traditional battle system, yoshitaka amano and not tetsuya nomura, nobuo uematsu and not junya nakano* I dunno. I think people want to play what'd have happened if FFVII was for the SNES and had FFIV storyline. I know I want to see what SNES FFVII (ie evolution to 2D orthodox final fantasy) would have played like. :D
We want a cup of nostalgic cough syrup *u* (or not.) (or I simply don't make sense at all, and I mostly never do.)

*I absolute adore his songs tough.
I was ready to come galavanting in here to defend my remake of FF7, but I see there's a disclaimer excusing remakes so nevermind that.

As far people who tend to "brand" their own original games as Final Fantasy, I kind of agree with both sides at the same time. Its kind of a why and why not issue. Some people just grow up loving Final Fantasy and when they find out they can make something in the vein of what they love, thats exactly what they do. The flip side of the coin is that people in that demographic are usually the least qualified to undertake such a task. I think the only time I consider it completely inappropriate is when all the FF staples are ignored (chocobos, Cid, steampunk) - the exception being Moogles as they seem to only be in 1/2 or so of them.

@JosephSeraph: You've pretty much described exactly what I'm working on so you'll be in for a treat when the demo comes out. :)
