NGP/PSP2
Posts
Sony has gotten official with the PSP2 we've been hearing so much about, but there's a name change. Now the handheld gaming console is referred to as the Next Generation Portable, or NGP.
As expected, Sony debuted the gaming system in Tokyo yesterday. There have been rumors swirling about what this device would look like, including an AMOLED display and 3G support.
According to The New York Times, 3G is definitely there, but the AMOLED screen has been traded for a 5-inch LED panel. Other specs include front and rear cameras, two sets of button controls and motion sensors. With the exception of an announcement about the PlayStation Suite, an app store for PlayStation games, the rest of the NGP is shrouded in mystery.
For those wondering when this was going to come out and thought they were not going to make it, Sony decided to randomly make this appear out of nowhere. I have no info so far as to what the japanese launch games are. If any at all.
Update:
Specs include a quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor, 5-inch touchscreen OLED display with 960 x 544 resolution, dual analog sticks (not nubs as on the current generation), 3G, WiFi, GPS, a rear-mounted touchpad, the same accelerometer / gyroscope motion sensing as in the PlayStation Move, an electronic compass, and cameras on both the front and back. Available this holiday season. Wait... what?!
Sony NGP detailed hands-on
I'm a big Sony supporter in general despite all the retarded decisions they've made over the years, and would love to have an NGP. But if it's going to cost >$300 USD, I'd rather stick with my PSP-2000 and save the money to buy a PS3.
Anyway, Sony at least needs a new Monster Hunter on board for the NGP to survive in Japan. I'm hoping Capcom sticks with them instead of jumping ship for the 3DS. In the long run, if they could somehow make handheld online gaming really work, they could carve out a (again mostly-Monster Hunters) niche in the market.

Handheld online gaming= Apple I-pod.
As for your Monster Hunter comment, I don't think they need it. They just actually need more games in general. Their current release rate of games is horrible at the moment just for the PSP's out now.
It seems to have quite a bit of technology inside, despite the fact we don't know anythig about it too much. But it was a very interesting and stupid move to release it out of nowhere. Next the PS4 will randomly appear.
But yes, it has quite a few interesting Features, and cool tocuh screen interface, and no 3D, therefore, lowering the intial price of the product. However, I hope they don't make the mistake they made with the first PSP's and completely focus on features instead of games, because that's really hurting them. I mean, I know I said above that they have a lack of games, but most of the current PSP library is crap and so is the PS3's, so they need to focus on gaming more console, and portabloe wise. Oh and a little off topic with the PS3, but Blu-ray is dead/dying. So fanboys can't use that as an excuse toward Xbox 360 fans, or DS fans.
Update: I also forgot to mention the fact that I believe they want this to be download only. I really hope they change that because this idea has already failed them and adding thousands of dollars of inside parts and features isn't going to help that fact. Remember the PSP-Go?

Hmm, I guess I don't know enough about Apple products to say anything about them...but maybe a (much) lower price point can keep the NGP competitive with the iPad. And let's not forget that there are some people who will always prefer analog controls to a touch screen. (I've seen some analog add-ons for the iPad, but I'm not sure how effective or widespread their use is...)

I can't argue against Sony needing more games (though hopefully quality > quantity to avoid the mountains of shovelware in the NDS and Wii libraries). But I wouldn't underestimate the importance of console-selling series like MH.

I would argue that the PSP (and, increasingly, the PS3) has a good library, however small. There are many fantastic exclusives, from big-name IPs and otherwise.

The PSPGo's release was definitely a bad idea, and prior PSP owners will likely again be resentful of the NGP's lack of a UMD drive. But if the new features and games of the NGP can find some kind of market, it will not be a repeat of the Go's failure.
Obviously I am very biased, though. B)
I hated the PSPGo, I'll grab it if there is a few things for the system that will intrigue me, but otherwise, its no better than a regular PSP, in which I use that as my music player.
If Sony wants to actually be a close competitor toward the 3DS that is also son coming, Sony will need to realize that it needs at least 5+ hours of battery life. Obviously, more would be recommended. But just look at the machine and it's revealed specs so far. It looks like it takes up more gas than a Mustang.
I only bought a PSP (3000) in the last year, used. I love it and the great library of RPGs and other games (P3P ftw). BUT, I'm cheapo. I don't mind this PSP2 having a tiny battery life, but I won't buy it until there's some really great impending new release *and* I feel like the new release won't be easy to find as a used copy in 8-10 months.
It does like really pretty. But, it seems like Sony is just giving more of the same; if they want to take market share from Nintendo, I don't think this won't do it. Maybe that much power will make it appeal to serious console gamers who don't play handhelds... but... how many of those are there?

To be honest, I might end up getting this, but only after it's been out for a while and one of the Kingdom hearts games inevitably comes out on it. The battery life doesn't bother me at all, as I'm used to the battery life of the PSP, even if it does seem to eat it all even when turned off...
The current PSP has a battery life of 7-10 hours depending on what you are doing (Not including the PSP GO) so if the PSP NGP with all its technology keeps the battery life at 7 hours at least, then it may not be so bad.
Well, my PSP-1000 is now dead. If this NGP has backwards compadibility with PSP UMDs then I'll get it. Otherwise, what's the point?
It definitely looks neat though. The two analog sticks especially excites me for PSX ports. That would open up a ton of games to porting. I wonder if it only has 2 top bottons again, or if they figured out how to have 4? I'll have to keep my eye on this puppy.

I'll have to agree with you about the PSP. There was an overwhelming lack of games for it and Sony didn't seem to care enough about the gaming aspect of the system. However, I'd say the PS3 has been doing really well in these areas. They have a much larger set of exclusive games coming out this year than Wii or Xbox. Regarding the update, Sony already announced that the NGP will use physical game cartridges very similar in shape and size to what the 3DS uses.
The newest update said they are using DIGITAL MEDIA. So they aren't using cartridges anymore. Probably like a SD or something. But not UMD.
Why UMDless seriously, or some other kind of disk drive/cartridge even. Don't Sony know not everyone in the world has the internet, Wifi, seriously I only know of one or two places where I live that offers good wifi service. Uncharted would be the only reason I'd think about getting this.
Impressive as hell, but I'd need a new internet router just to use it.

Last I heard, the PSP2/NGP uses "Dedicated Flash Media", so basically just SD cards made for the specific games.
The problem is what was the point of UMD? Because of poor sales, they already lost money off it. But since lots of people still have them, it would be smarter to have the NGP, or a different version of it, have UMD support. I mean, soon, they won't even support the PSP anymore, and all the UMDS in everyones closet will be useless.
SD cards as an alternative to UMDS and Carts are strange to me. I mean, what's the game case going to look like? A paperclip box? Are they going to put the SD cards in UMD size cases?
As for games, the Dual Analog does look useful in many cases. So it could be a godsned to send the Sony portables back up to competing with Nintendo. However, they are doing exactly what the GO did. Which is kinda stupid since the GO failed a little too hard.
Another point is the fact that most games will have to be downloaded. This also means you will have to FREQUENTLY upgrade your NGP over and over again just like the I-Pod. The PSP did this, but not as frequently as the I-pod. Now some actually don't care in the I-pods case. But frequent updates on a device that's not as popular will help it lose sales.
Of course, there are probably a very large amount of features for this thing. This aslo worries me as it seems Sony focuses way more on features then games.
Another worry is what about movies? What happened to movie UMDs? And when this comes out, will movies be on $80 Sd cards? Is Sony going to come out with Blu-ray SD?($100 per movie.) Or will movies only be downloadable? Because that's something the I-pod does to.
The device as shown is also Touch Screen. But with the actual large amounts of button on the console, what games would be able to use both touch screen and buttons. I do think the supposed "tilt" function is a good idea.
All and all, this looks way to risky for its own good. But an interesting idea.

oh good, a touch screen
innovation at it's finest?
edit: just noticed the second joystick
THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN SOLVED BEFORE THE PSP1000 EVER DEBUTED

It doesn't have a UMD drive since they switched the format the games are in, but it is backward compatible with downloaded PSP games.
Going off the pics from here http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/27/the-sony-psp2/
It looks like it only has two shoulder buttons
And man, a res of 960*544, thats just nuts.
