Hey guys! first of all...

I'm sure this is asked a lot but.. RM2k3 / RMXP / RMVX which is the best for beginners? is it just personal preference? which has the most resources available?

Secondly whats the best way to start out, just tinkering with everything available? or jumping right into making a game and learning as i go?

aaand lastly, if i wanted to make scripts to change things such as combat, is there a good tutorial on how to write scripts for rpg maker?
Ok, simple answers for you:

I recommend RMVX. It's not harder to use then 2k3 or XP, but it gives you more options as you progress in your gamemaking skills, so there's no point starting with one engine and moving to another.

2k3 has more resources available, though.

Best way to start would be
1 - Playing a couple of games recommended by the community, just so you know what you're messing with;
2 - Opening the editor and screwing around with the commands and options;
3 - Making a SMALL project. Very small.
This will give you enough experience to think of bigger projects.

As for scripts, they are everywhere. You just have to google for them. You can also request them here.

Thanks! Also, what games would you recommend? preferably a short one, and a long one

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Some of the other RPG Maker community sites have big repositories of resources and scripts. This site focuses more on the games themselves and the theory&design behind making them, but if you ask for specific things we can often help or tell you where to look.

As for which maker to use: Meh. Once you learn one you can pretty much jump to any of the others, the basics are all the same, so I don't really think "learning a new system later" is a problem. Frankly if you don't know anything about scripting I'd pick the one that you like the default battle system in the best. 2003 has an ATB battle system like the SNES/PSX Final Fantasy games, while the other makers all have turn-based battle systems that I can't really tell any major differences between.

If you just want the one that's easiest to learn, go with RPG Maker 95, haha. Unfortunately any game you create with it will be a piece of shit. But it doesn't have scripts or variables or battle events or anything, it's super simplified. Theoretically a good learning tool. ...If you can find a help file for it, that is.

Put bluntly, RM95 is basically RMVX without RGSS.

And without variables.

And without a lot of the more complex event commands.

And without battle events.
and all limits are hard coded and the effect of equipment only affects one stat determined by the type of equipment

it does have mouse support and different test modes though
Hey, another quick question. (i've decided to use VX) while playing a couple other games that have been made in VX, a lot of them do not use the same tilesets (i think thats what its called) how am i able to use different tilesets in my game as well?

Hey Ryuk, I would say reading this tutorial:

http://rpgmaker.net/tutorials/429/

would help you understand how to import different tilesets into your game project!
Yeah. If you want to change the graphics put them in the YourGameDirectory\Graphics\System\System . They're named TileA1-5 and TileB-E. If no graphics are there the game will use the default RTP graphics. Open one of the games in RMVX that uses non-default tilesets and look in their gamefolder to see how it works.

Unfortunately RMVX got hit by the shitstick with using multiple tilesets in one game. There're workarounds but they all suck, don't bother trying this until you get some experience with the editor under your belt.

*edit*
Or see rabitZ's post too! In fact do that.
