I NEED TO LEARN TO SPRITE OR GET SPRITES MADE.

LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

I like the way your sprite looks when standing still, except his front knee is really high. Definitely a much more realistic look than most RM games, which is great and will make you stand out. I don't like the swaying movement. Not only do I not like *any* swaying movement for battle sprites, since they universally look extremely silly like the characters are super-drunk or something, but the way you have him swaying is somewhat unnatural as well. (I realize professional boxers sometimes bounce up and down but they look silly too. And they definitely don't sway back and forth like a drunk.)

I know what you mean, I've seen some silly battler idle animations in my time too. (Xenogears, Citan, anyone?)
The guy need to do something though, I just don't know what :D

there's just not enough room for a semi-realistically proportioned character to be sdrawn in 48x48 without very visible pixel edges).
Well its a few pixels taller but really...
*edit* by the way its not done by me,obviously, it was done by Pawige.

Regarding your sprite...not bad for first time sprite, those hands are very well done, head could be alot smaller, you need to rework legs totally and anatomical proportions. Great start.

Cheers man. That sprite there is awesome (and I'm thinking of tracing it for proportions/poses.. My game's gonna be gun-ey). I'm going to use 96x96 battle animations for my character now anyway, I think. That should give me more room to maneuver which I apparently need at this stage. Yeah the anatomy kinda sucks I know. I still kinda like him though.

No it's not finished yet!

Up against the kind of background he will eventually be up against.

I got a friend who studied fashion (and could draw figures) to draw me out a figure, roughly to my specification, on paper so I could get some decent proportions (although fashion drawing doesn't really use realistic proportions anyway, everything's LONG and skinny), then I scanned it in, resized it to 96x96 and started pixelling away.

He's not meant to look like an action hero, he's meant to look pretty everyman (except sharply dressed :P) and kinda weak/scared.

As a side note, my monitor is no help whatsoever when it comes to working with pixels.
It looks really really good. :D

Yeah! It looks great! But... I don't think this'll work as a battle sprite because of the direction his body is turned to. D:
Maybe, I hope not.

BTW I love his face.
Nice, its great for one of your first attempts, the battler was also good, I agree that you cant see the face much but you never really need to see the face for fast action battlers, you can just have a face-set on the side if thats soo important. The swayings o.k but the knees are a bit high, I like swaying it makes you look like your a mortal kombat fighter or a really hardy drunk n_n

I'm gonna give your technique a shot and sprite over a scanned drawing, I feel it will be alot easier than just trial and error ( which is what I've been doing all week felt like it was useless ). I take it back, spritings pretty tough especially getting smooth animation with it. I still think the best sprites are from Metal Slug and Street Fighter, so I'll just have to keep at it untill I can get my own style and learn with all of you.

this is a great way to learn to pixel in general! even google images is good for this- find a subject or shape you want to get better at pixeling, then just reduce it and explore the outline in pixels. i did this a lot a while back, and still do for some stuff. it's always good to have a reference.

Dude, that is fucking badass.
I love the style so much and think that would look awesome to have in game.
i'm so jealous right now

this is really nice too, in a sort of side scroller sort of way.
but both images is what I had in mind when we were discussing battler sprites and whatnot recently.
I think you nailed it perfectly, it can only get better from here on.
