I feel like I'm being shown up now. Damn you Kryptonites! *Shakes fists at Krypton*
One day, I will redo my mountain like that...but until then, I'm not going to bother. It's a nice map though.

I was actually very impressed with the winding of your cliffs. It inspired me to do that map. I'm going to try to do something like that in my style. And thanks man. ~Sion
It's pretty confusing if you're not used to it, that I can say. Especially if you're aiming to get the winding right.

Especially if you're trying to aim for something kinda like this. I'd like to do something like that for my mountain, since it's pretty lackluster (it's not TERRIBLE, but it suffers from the same problems that a lot of my older maps do. Bottom right is what I'm referring to in the above image. Really, FFVI is kinda my inspiration for some of my maps in terms of redesigning...to a degree. I can't pull off the mapping that VI did, because I'm not a fan of small walkways like the older FF games do. ^^;
Some of my Youkai Mountain maps (prepare to cringe some):

Note, I still consider some of these maps my best from before I started remapping. I'd love to redo these in better fashion but alas, I have other things to do like progressing the story and database work. Really wish I had another mapper to pick up the remapping while I did the database work. x_x;;
EDIT - Final version of this map, so no more cave maps for me for a while.

Added in the decorations and some lava. Best I can do right now!

Ah, okay! So, obviously the water jets should stay where they are since those would built symmetrically. Mix up the lilypads, put some a tile or two off the wall, maybe swap the places of one or two of the flowered ones so they're not directly opposite each other, and I think you'll be good.
I kinda did what you said here. ;)

I also tried another approach. I am more fond of this one, but I don't know what you think is better. :D

I guess the fences are okay, right?

A screenshot from Wild Thunder: Gotta Shoot 'em All!
LockeZ, Sauce and myself's entry tech demo for RSW 2013.
@Mr. Detective: I like the top one! It's symmetric, but less obviously so. Split-down-the-middle symmetry looks very odd if it occurs too often :)
Oh noes, some cute little (wtf is that? gerbils? aliens?) are coming toward me! Whatever shall I do?
Nice work tho'.
Nice work tho'.
@Brady: I'll never get that "hobbyist" argument either. xD ...To me that's like if you submit an essay written in net-speak and expect a good grade. And when you don't get it, you're like: "Fuck you, teacher! This isn't RL, is just school! Stop cramping my creativity! YOLO!"
Heh; This is not about "hobby-ism?" vs "professionalism", is just basic discipline. Something you should demonstrate in everything you do in life, specially in a hobby since is something you LOVE to do... But there's such a thing as loving what you do for the right reasons and the wrong reasons. That's why it is important for people to question their own motives, even if they're not too happy with the results.
The "You can do what you want" line should come much after the criticism has sinked, otherwise it kinda cancels it. Or it should not to come at all since it's pretty much obvious. Only people who are too defensive about their ideas or too sensitive about the "harshness" in which others express theirs, are incapable to realize it's there. But they have to learn somehow, and what better way than the hard way? ;P
@Sion: Dormant Sky! Yeah! ...That's a pretty nice map. But just to nitpick, it bothers me when there's no clear distinction between the upper and the lower levels in the bottom sections of a map. There's no illusion of depth when all that separates one body of grass from the other is a tiny edge of rock. - You can make that more evident, by having the upper level cast a shadow on the level below or something.

OK, I'll go with that, then. :) How about this one? Should I mix them up like the other one? :P

How about this?

AE, that's like a page ago. Give it a rest. I'm either doing it or I'm not. And based on your trying to bully me, I'm saying not.
I have no problem with even the harshest criticism (I was told my first game should have something ugly and scary built on top of it, and be sent to hell). What I do have a beef with is people telling me what to do.
Listen, I've spent most of my life trying to live up to the expectations of others. About two or three years ago, I toured the country doing WWOOF (an organic farming thing). One of these places I mistakenly went to turned out to be run by cultists. You really don't know what it's like watching people try to completely control each other.
There is no place in this world for busybodies who tell other people how to live. There really isn't. So, yes, forget you.
...So. New topic. The bottom one. The other is too regular.

LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Oh my God. Okay. Stop. You guys can keep doing the screenshot thing, whatever, who cares. But I HAVE to hear the story about the cultists. Please post it in the What Are You Thinking About welp topic, please please please.
@Bulmabriefs: I'm talking to Brady now. Our little line of conversation may be related to what happened "a page ago" but it has nothing to do with you. If you have something to say feel free to interject, but don't get all paranoid on me, please. I'm not trying to "bully" you. Also, I don't need your life story. WTF, man? xD ...Oh, and thanks! That's very kind of you. ;)
@Mr_Detective: None! They're still too symmetrical/aligned to each other and it doesn't look so natural. Try something a bit less rigid:

It was a passive aggressive way of bringing it back up. Note that Brady said nothing at all that page, I said something unrelated, and two posts later you respond to "him" with a post.
Also, Locke, your wish has been granted. Now alter, you must grant one.

@Bulma:
Aye, conversations evolve beyond what initially started them. He didn't respond becasue...idk, he was asleep or something? We haven't specifically mentioned you in like two pages now, we're talking about the fact that almost every time the two of us debate on a topic, he finds it weird that I tell people to stop fucking things up, then tell them to do whatever they want.
Keep up! :D
@AE:
Well I guess it really depends on your intentions. Some people will make games, as a hobby, for the sake of publishing them, making a name for themselves etc. Fair enough then, criticism will be far more important since ignoring public opinion will generally only cause problems.
But plenty of people also participate in the hobby purely for themselves. Make a game they personally find fun and want to create their own work as they envision it. Changing it to public opinion would be, to use my cubism metaphor, Picasso just not using cubic art and just going with standard impressionism. He did cubism because he, personally, thought it was a rad idea and ignored the fact that he was surrounded by people that thought it was completely fucking stupid.
Ofc, it worked out for him in the end, but that's besides the point, really.
I suppose it's possibly a bit premature for me to advise people to prioritise their interests and preferences above everyone elses, since I often don't know their intentions of creating the game, however I just take it as a good view on life to assume that one should worry more about making themselves happy than others.
But possibly also because if they do follow public opinion, then they're going to ignore my "Do w/e makes you happy" speech anyways, so no harm, no foul? :D
@Topic:
Just since I haven't posted anything on-topic in a while now...

Have given black outlines to the characters so they better fit the tileset style (since everything else in the tilesets and comic panels were outlined, but the characters weren't) so it shouldn't look quite as cut and paste as it did.
Also drew in the secondary soldier, but just couldn't make him look as good as the concept, despite him being my favourite baddy D:
(note: was going to post an actual screeny of them, but since the map inside the facility is bland as balls right now, seemed kinda pointless, tbph. Really need to take a day and do some more tileset work or something...)

@Brady: I don't know. I guess it depends on the person. I'd be careful not to give that sort of validation to just about anyone... *shrug*
@Mr_Detective: Are those two different locations, or are you deciding in which one to use? In any case, in the top one the fences kinda get lost against the floor. Don't you have some different ones? Ones made of stone maybe? - In the bottom one, the vending machines look kinda out of place, imo. Where do they plug into? ...As for the lily-pads. Maybe if they moved around, arranging them wouldn't be a problem.

where are the screenshots of yesteryear?
I made a little vid of the demo title and class selection menu for Lily. I like the quiet of the the menus right now, but I'm wondering if they're just a little too peaceful for a roguelike with permadeath...
EDIT: Either I suck at producing or YouTube sucks at rendering :P
