On the other hand, yeah, it does suck when people change names and you need 1 year to find out by accident that someone was never gone but just had his name changed.
For me personally it is just that I have the name "Batistaberg" everywhere else and it's kinda annoying not to have it here on RMN, because I registered ages ago with an old n00b name and have to stick with it... :-/

Isn't it possible to have some event once a year where everyone can change their username if they want, and all the changes are listed somewhere? I saw this working on another site.

Hah. Wow, some people are a little too excited about a slight possibility of getting their username changed. There won't be any yearly username change events or the ability to change usernames amount of times per year. This type of thing will be extremely rare with no formal system in place. It can be a pretty big hassle on the administrative side as well as being confusing for everyone involved. One of the things I liked least about the Gaming World forums was trying to figure out what the "flavor of the week" username was for the admins and mods. Honestly, I am still have no idea who was who.
I don't really like the idea either, especially on a site like this where users are also known by their submissions, contributions, and game projects; it just gets too confusing as time goes on.
I think it maybe could be considered if someone made a silly ass capital/number clusterfuck name way back in 2003 or something when they were like 14 or whatever, but even then.
