games are more important than stats. though I debated having this just as a forum thread, too, but decided to make it an article to increase its visibility. And at the end of the year, when Misaos come along, people will refer to these lists.

Hopefully they'll die and be replaced. But mostly, I hope they die.

Yeah last misaos were a disaster I'm going to admit... The more I think about it there's not really much you can do to solve the problem. Unless maybe RMN gets a population that can outnumber a typical XP game fanbase.
Replaced with what? The general sentiment is that good games should be recognized, but choices made by popular vote isn't good enough, and choices made by a committee aren't good enough.

Choices made by popular vote with more votes. That's the best solution I can think of. I don't think the Misaos should be taken away.

Replace them with a set of ridiculous and weirdly specific awards for things like Best Use Of Horse.WAV and Game Most Reminiscient Of 90s Music Videos and Best Item Names and Most Imaginative Use Of Mummies & Ghouls and Best Transgender Villain and Most Inappropriate Use Of That Weird RTP Pentagram and then award them all completely arbitrarily to everyone who released a game that year. It would basically be the regular misaos except slightly more tolerable and self aware. The winners would all be awarded the coveted members.tripod.net/Goku_420/index.html "Killer App" award for outstanding videogame achievements.

I don't think another voting system could avoid sad results like the one from 2010. But what can be done is to forbid people with 0 posts/submissions/etc. to take part in the voting so that nobody can a) register fake accounts (even months before) to vote for his own game and b) bring all his friends from school to vote for him.
This will make the amount of voters smaller of course, but remember that the voting from 2009 was quite okay although it had less voters than 2010.

Jesting aside. Catmitts is actually on to something: more specific and personal categories tailored to this community is a step in the right direction. The current categories are so by the book and really could apply to ANY game "lol atmosphere? genesis/vacantsky had that! better vote it for best atmosphere!" Back when dinosaurs roamed the earth the misao categories seemed more practical. We aren't exactly 'indie awards' material here...

We don't have enough of a userbase to have a popular vote. Nor do we have enough people actually playing fucking games to have a popular vote. Most people probably play less games from this site per year than there are categories in the Misaos and I'm not even trolling when I make that claim.
