A MAPPING CONTEST!
Posts
RMVX (and I guess XP?? never used it) isn't really inferior to 2k3 for mapping except that it is one layer short. I don't consider the lack of diagonal tiles an inherent fault (that's RTP, the default resources, not the engine), and I don't consider the auto-tiling an inherent fault (nobody's forcing you to use the auto-tiles). Those are the most common complaints that I hear. It can do everything else, parallax mapping et al.
Now that I got that out of the way:
yes plz. I almost assumed this from the get-go

author=Pokemaniacauthor=Feldschlacht IVI don't get this. Pretty much the only differences between 2k3 mapping and XP mapping are that XP has 3 layers instead of 2, and that XP allows you to place any tile on any level. VX is a different story, obviously, but I don't see how you could say 2k3 mapping is better than XP.
I'm not really too excited about XP or VX's visual mapping capability so far, though. The best XP map is about on par with say...a barely above average 2K3 map. The tools for XP/VX maps to look stellar, I just haven't seen.
(Unless there is some major difference between XP and 2k3 mapping I don't know about?)
Alls I'm saying is that I've seen far prettier mapping with 2k3, and not even just accounting rips. If someone could top that with XP/VX, more power to them. I just haven't seen it yet.

I am aware of those games. They don't look bad. However, my opinion stands.

Can 2k3 do that? Yes.
Can it do it without losing graphical quality and looking grainy? No.

Heirs of Techcatl and Eyes without a face use panorama mapping.
The others are nice looking, but not really that impressive.
But indeed, there's no reason to say 2k3 maps are better looking than VXP. The same tilesets can be used in either one, and the way mapping is made is pretty much the same.

is parallax mapping not considered a valid technique ??? it's right there in the name... panorama/parallax mapping... wh-what have I been doing with my game T_T
but in all seriousness, I guess in the context of THIS COMPETITION, a map consisting *only* of a panorama would be inappropriate.
You're only limited by your ideas/imagination. The thing is that RM2k/3 has had a lot more time to gain graphical (God, I am just struggling for words today -_-;) urgh... diversity, as it were. And that's not the word I'm looking for. Variety. Abundance. Something like that.
The other engines haven't had as much time to get people used to it, and yeah, the 32x32 doesn't help with movement aspects. That said, they are better for custom work or parallaxing. I'll probably just use RM2K3 though... and RTP. Because I can. (Unless the rules say I can't, in which case I won't.)

Why are you guys discussing engines in an event that is all about artistic production and actual game design knowledge.

it is relevant to the rules, to the motivation of those who will be participating, to the overall highest possible quality as limited by the engine / your imaginaaaation.
What you are using for your mapping is .. pretty integral to mapping. My last comment raised a question about the validity of a map that is purely panorama/parallax (as that can be mostly your ability to make pretty graphics in an outside program) ... etc. I think that's pretty on-topic.
Anyway, this thread isn't even about any particular thing except "maybe we should try this out!" - If someone were to post a real thread announcing a contest with rules it would be a lot more SERIOUS BISNUZ.

Yeah you're basically right. I really don't give a shit who uses what as long as shit turns out pretty; I was giving my two cents, by all means please don't let me take the topic off track.

hi colour management
If you ask me, parallax mapping is kinda cheating. The amount of detail you could put is amazing. But if you're judging more on layout, functionality, design, etc. then it should not matter if the map is pretty or not.
but... it's a mapping contest, not a level design contest. pretty is the goal, or at least it has been in contests of the same name.
parallax mapping takes about 900 times longer than regular mapping, especially if you're doing full custom tiles/art. i would call that a severe handicap, not 'cheating.'

It shouldn't matter what technique you use, since art is subjective. Your idea may not correlate to another persons, but that doesn't mean it's wrong or unfair! Parallax mapping vs. pretty 16x16 tiles, outside program or not...it does not matter. Good map design elements do not discriminate! :)
This is game development community, why would our contests not focus on design instead of fucking graphical e-peen?
author=Crazehey you should do that event you were talking about.
