A MAPPING CONTEST!

Why not just have a set theme instead. That way we can have the flexibility of using what graphics we like but still be sort of similar. I vote a type of dungeon or town or just something simple that everyone can interpret differently.

Just want to highlight that again.

Tau, are you thinking brownie points for atmosphere and making the map interactive, or will this be a straight up post a screenshot deal? I'd definitely prefer to download and play all the maps like last time.

Also, welcome back =)
How about a rule saying it has to be functional - playable with little-to-no errors. Dock points for things like passability, event failure and what-not. That way if someone does use parallaxing they at least have to have the map play well as well.

After all, it still needs to fit into the grid properly in order to move around... unless you want to use pixel by pixel movement. In which case, congratulations! You have far too much time on your hands.

Wow this topic certainly took a weird turn. I only made the topic here so we could get ideas(As some have done so far) and maybe make this an official RMN thing if all went well the first time out.

I had no engine restrictions in mind to be honest, just a theme that people followed. Making it playable like those last little events we had here I was kinda on the fence with, but I was thinking of having the option available so that some people could just take a screen-shot of what they did and some could make theirs playable.

Could do group efforts if wanted, no real size restrictions, maybe even if it was too big but you didn't want to release it you could have just made a Youtube entry for it?
maybe you should make an event in your vision!
I agree with geodude, go ahead, I'd join
NO WE ONLY HAD ONE SHOT AT THIS AND THERE CAN NEVER BE ANOTHER MAPPING CONTEST AND NOW THE FUTURE IS RUINED GOOD WORK GUYS you killed rmn

Personally I prefer contests where we all use the same chipset because it focuses more on the mapping skills and it simplifies the process because you don't have to find and edit chipsets.

That's not a bad sentiment. I always believe that setting boundaries promotes creativity. On the same token, I think that allowing a multitude of chipsets will promote more entries, and grant more ideas to everyone involved.

And yeah, fellas, don't be afraid to start up an event you think people would be interested in. That sort of thing will always be supported, just try to maintain some common sense about it to prevent Karsuman from shutting you down! That is to say, make sure the idea is sound, promotes creativity and community involvement, and if there are already similar events going on, be courteous and wait until those events have completed before starting your own.

Calunio took point and started one already, which is fine, although people may wish to go about it differently. Communicate with other members, decide on a plan that other event creators are ok with, then go forward. No need to request permission from staff. Don't get bummed if people don't respond to your idea. Also, staff will pick up on events like these that crop up, and those with considerable interest will be given the RMN treatment via Event pages and front-page notices. It's the staff's job to highlight what the community is doing. This is going to be a big theme for RMN4.

I agree that boundaries bring out more creativity in some cases. For example if we are using a specific tileset the limited use of tiles forces people to try to use the tiles in creative ways which is what I enjoy most about that.

Allowing the contestants more choices certainly makes the contest more appealing but it also requires more work which takes more time and less people end up finishing. My big problem with that is if a choice of chipset is allowed I will always end up having to splice and edit chipsets otherwise I won't feel like I tried my best. But I suppose a rule against editting would fix that. I'd probably participate either way but I like the one tileset idea because many people are used to it and it focuses more on mapping.

It certainly sounds like a reasonable condition for a future mapping event.

I like this too. I guess mine is more of a "screenshot contest" than a "mapping contest". Just different concepts though.
