CHOICE MAKES YOU UNHAPPY
Posts
To quote from this article:
I couldn't agree with this more. I'm almost NEVER satisifed with the choices I make with regards to career plans, food, clothing, the music I listen to, pretty much anything really. I also can't help feeling that I'd be happier if I didn't have so many options available.
What does RMN think? Would we better off in developing countries where there is less choice, or as, idk, robots? Or is unhappiness through freedom of choice the fault of indecisive people?
Modern life is making us miserable because we have too much choice, claims new research.
From the foods we eat, to the television channels we watch, to the schools we send our children too and the career we choose to pursue, society has never offered us so much variety.
But while the ability to choose is generally a good thing, too much freedom of choice is crippling us with indecision and making us unhappy, claims the new research.
People can become paralysed by too much variety and wracked with uncertainty and regret about whether they have made the right decision.
Ultimately they can be less satisfied by the choices they have made.

Well clearly I'm not the only one suffering from it. Or is that not what you mean?
I think the problem is in reverse; there's a lot of indecisive people, and the amount of choice the world offers brings that shit out, not the reverse and the world is MAKING you indecisive. There have always been people who don't know what they want, its just that nowadays it's more apparent.
I guess it just depends on the person. Me, personally, I know exactly what I want out of life and what I need to/should do to get there. Patience is my biggest weakness, but I wouldn't consider myself to be indecisive.

For some reason, the thought of drug usage popped into my head when I read this... {-D
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

This topic makes me think of that episode of House where he diagnosed a woman who had a neurological condition that made her physically incapable of making choices.
Yeah I know I'd much prefer someone to tell me what to do. I remember the later on in school you got the more it was focused on self-studying and doing stuff on your own. Well. I was always better at just doing everything during school hours and then shutting down once I got home. It's a similar thing, when there's a watchful eye around telling you to sit down and listen or do this and that. Then all my attention is on that. But when I have a choice of when to do something...
Well... Obviously I'll do it half-assed the night before it has to be handed in.
It may or may not be related. Because I guess it's more that it's freedom that is sucking rather than choice.

Uh, guys, if I wanted therapy I'd go to Yahoo! Answers. I AM very indecisive but so far this has not lead to mental breakdowns or anything. Can we talk in general terms rather than saying "this is your problem Luke only you can fix it"? Thanks
Well, there is the aspect that people worry that they made the wrong choice, or less than perfect choice, when they have more options. The more options there are the harder it is to analyze and weigh the options and thus when a decision is made, there is that nagging feeling that perhaps that they didn't make the ideal choice, and are ultimately less satisfied with the choice they made.
I know I feel like that sometimes.
(I recently just got a new smartphone...but was it the best one I could've gotten for the price I paid for it? would I have been happier with a Samsung Focus? or a blackberry?)

Sidenote: Anyone("anyone") can make an article on something and post it online. Doesn't make it a true, factual, or any of the sort.
Did I type this right? I'm kind of stoned at the moment.

What about a lecture by a decent psychologist? (Not saying it makes the idea true, just gives it more...weight)
