If its the mainstream your looking at i can understand perfectly most are lame.
But you get that with the mainstream in a lot of cases.
Both Debbie Gibson and Frank Sinatra are considered "pop" music, but just from looking at Debbie you would never think pop has anything memorable

Thats a great quote, Hicks was an incredible comedic force.

Richard Pryor, Dave Chappelle, Kat Williams, and George Carlin remain my favorite classic comedians.

Bill Hicks' sets were amazingly funny as long as he wasn't banging on about how smokers are better than everyone else. And then he died of cancer.

Eh... I'm not sure he was saying smokers were better than everyone else, more just saying he was sick of people bitching about smokers. Which makes your remark pretty funny.

Louis CK has been my favorite comedian the past few years or so. If you can find the radio show he was on with Donald Rumsfeld, do listen. It's fantastic.

I just got done watching Dirty Work with chris Farley.

Absolutely Hilarious

No-one's mentioned any British names yet!

Limiting it to current, famous-slash-established standups for the most part… I highly recommend Dylan Moran, Stewart Lee, Richard Herring… and he's kinda maligned nowadays but I still like Ricky Gervais' first couple of live dvds a lot.

Off the top of my head, some others that I hesitate to rank as favourites but probably would if I'd seen more than an hour or two of their stuff are Tim Key, Mark Watson, Simon Munnery, Josie Long, Simon Amstell (his standup is... quite different from his Buzzcocks stuff), David O'Doherty, Miles Jupp, Jon Richardson… Anyone seen/heard/have any opinions on/don't have any opinions on any of these?

(ftr, favourite US stand-ups are the usual crowd… Carlin, Hicks, Seinfeld, Emo Phillips, Louis C.K. etc. etc. (and Mitch Hedberg is probably my straight-up favourite standup, full stop))

ever listen to doug stanhope?-u.S comic

Dylan moran i have heard of, sadly the only british comics i know are jimmy carr and the Monty Python Troupe
Yeah, I've heard a bit of Stanhope, he did seem to be pretty good! On the whole I'm quite into the UK scene (this is possibly evident from the fact everyone put 1-2 names and I put 93), but not really familiar with too many US guys. Only seen about 5-10 minutes of most of the names in this thread, will try and watch more sometime and form a better opinion. And if you've not heard of some of the ones I listed, if you ever get bored please do look them up! Some of their stuff is faantastic.
