TERRARIA

I was pretty shocked to find out that there isn't much talk of Terraria on RMN since it's been hyped as a Minecraft killer despite not being much like Minecraft at all from a gameplay perspective.

Terraria is a game that is all about gathering resources such as gold, iron, sand, stone and much more to build houses, craft weapons, and generally just stay alive. In Terraria, there is the day and the night. During the day you are relatively safe to go out and chop down trees or go underground to mine diamonds, minerals, and ores. There isn't much risk during the day since really all you have to worry about are slimes bouncing around and, thankfully, they're pretty easy to kill. Underground is a bit different, with new monsters appearing the further below ground you go.

The night is a bit different and, unless you're well equipped with good armor and weapons, it's best to wait the night out somewhere due to the high number of flying demon eyes and zombies that prowl the landscape.

The point of the game is to generally just build sufficient shelters during the day for NPCs will move into if they are probably furnished, while also making armors and weapons from the ores and such you find underground.

Terraria is loads of fun. It's like a sandbox game that also has a clear goal for players to work towards.

Here is the official trailer for Terraria that shows some of the features of the game, along with how it is NOT a Minecraft clone (which is what many people refer to it as).

To kind of show off what you can build as far as homes or shelters go, here is a place that my friend and I made last night on brand new characters. It may not look like much, but it took almost five straight hours to make since we had to climb up to a floating island, hollow it out, and then use a huge amount of resources to build our fort (the resource gathering was about an hour in total). We're far from done too, because we want to make a west entrance as well as furnish the rooms with beds, chandeliers, and more.

So does anyone else here play Terraria? If not, I can probably answer any questions about the game (and I'm sure there would be some since my description of the game sucks).

Terraria is available on Steam for a mere $10. I've played the game for about 16 hours so far and aren't even close to being bored yet, so the $10 is definitely a steal.

I am SO checking this out after work tonight. How is multiplayer handled? Need someone else's Steam ID/Account info/IP address, or is there a hub where hosts can post? Is Single- and Multi-player segregated, or can you Solo your own world for a while, then let someone else join you?
Fun Fact: The guy who made SMBX made this game.

Characters you make can be used in both singleplayer and multiplayer. It's like Diablo's open Battle.net services.

Multiplayer is basically just connecting to an IP address, whether it's a server or just a friend's computer. Servers can hold quite a few players (I forget the exact number, or if there is even a limit). If you don't want to play on a server, you or a friend can just host a game and play together, which is my favourite way to play Terraria.

Oh boy! I can't wait for it to constantly crash if I turn on the music!

Terraria actually liked to crash for me a lot when I'd change the settings from the main menu, but it appears to have stopped doing that.

Aside from that, I've had no issues with the stability of the game yet.
it crashed for me once, seemingly randomly. lost 124 meteorite ore + shadow chainmail that way! only problem i've had w/ stability though. i was hosting a server at the time, might've had something to do with it, iuno

i imagine the design process for this game consisted mostly of Redigit (the main dev/programmer) saying "oh hey, i know what would be sick" and then adding things regardless of whether they make any sense

which i kind of respect because hey it's a really fun game/not autistic and boring like minecraft

edit: to expand on that design process thing, this is a game where you literally mash stars and spacerocks with a flintlock pistol to make it into a magical laser gun
A friend of mine and I have known about this game for a month or so (before it was released), and now that it is, we'll be getting it eventually and forcing other people to get it so we can have a Kickass Terraria Partay.

It looks outstanding, in my opinion. It is basically a side-scrolling, 2D Minecraft...which makes me wonder what the creator of Minecraft thinks about Terraria.

Nevertheless, I want to check this out at some point.

This is what Notch has said about Terraria (on Twitter):
It's an amazing looking game (..). I'm looking forward to playing it

well, considering they're working toward a common goal
I've been playing this with a few of my friends too, this is fun! It's weird because I didn't enjoy minecraft at all but I really like playing this game.
How difficult is this to get into? Dwarf Fortress difficult?
um no

there's literally nothing complex about the game at all
Its not difficult, its just a huge time sink game.

can't make a bad game if you don't finish any games

Multiplayer is the best way to play this game. Floating sky castle that shoots lava at intruders is go.

Also, digging straight down always ends in hilarity. Or Hell; depending on how far you dig.

jesus christ. this is drawing influence and then there's this. beyond shameful.
If anyone's interested in playing multiplayer with a larger group, a couple friends of mine have a dedicated server running Terraria.

I hate this game and found it to be a waste of my $10. I mean I LOVE the concept and I try playing it maybe once a week but I don't get more than 10 minutes in before I start hating it and want my money back.

Its no Minecraft killer at all. It will never be. The mention of Minecraft sold this ugly thing.

I had a hunch he did :-) I've had talks with the guy. That doesn't mean I like it though. The controls are bad and cumbersome.
