TOP TEN TOPIC: ARCADE GAMES
Posts
Of course, you immediately thought of Asteroids and Space Invaders and Pac-man. Those are fine. What I am going for this week is the genre known as Arcade games, and the genre is thriving. Just look at sites like BigFishGames and MSN Games and Pop Cap games. They are filled with arcade games like Bejeweled, Zuma, Peggle, Diner Dash, and the like!
So, this week's Top 10 explores these "mini" games. Of course, Asteroids and Pac-Man still count - they fall in this genre (heck, they helped define it!). I'd try not to include games that you'd find in an arcade, though...like Street Fighter or something. Save those for an upcoming Fighting Game or Shooting Game top 10.
Again, it's the genre of Arcade games that I am looking for, not games that just happen to be in an arcade.
10. Jezzball
Your goal is to trap bouncing red and white balls on the screen by placing horizontal bars on the gameplay area. Surprisingly addictive.
9. Tetris
Classic.
8. Diner Dash
A game where you wait on tables and get points. But why is it so fun? I don't know, but it is.
7. Lemmings
Oh No! *poof*
6. Asteroids
Classic clear-everything-on-the-map. Rinse. Repeat. (Kind of like the first Diablo)
5. Pac-Man
Classicfeederism eating game. Damn you Pinky!
4. Mad caps
Match 3 or more same coloured bottle caps in a row by switching two caps' positions.
3. Zuma
Fire coloured balls out of the launcher into a moving chain of balls. Match 3 or more colours to clear them. You win by clearing all the balls.
2. Insaniquarium
Feed fish, collect the coins they drop. Buy more fish. It gets insane when you have a ton of fish. Super amounts of fun.
1. Peggle
Plinko on crack.
Honorable mention:
Tetris Attack
Tetris 2
ZapWords
Space Pinball

You're too old Kentona, I've never seen an arcade with any of these games (exceptpossibly Pacman). My idea of arcade games is the Capcom massive 2d action games like Knights of the Round, and of course, Street Fighter. There's others, like Virtua Cop too.
My favorites would probably be...
- The Simpsons Arcade game
- Virtua Cop
- Knightsof the Round
And, uh, that's all I really remember playing. I never had many quarters in my youth :(

Well kentona was talking about the arcade game genre. Basically, a repetitive gameplay element where you attribute a score.
I also love Tetris Attack.

Just so you know the average age for self-described "serious" gamers is above 30 years old.
In no particular order except for Time Crisis:
Time Crisis (this invented the now-ubiquitous cover mechanic in shooters)
Breakout
Tetris
Street Fighter
Dungeons and Dragons
Final Fight
Ms. Pac-Man (NOT the original Pac-Man)
Donkey Kong
Donkey Kong Jr.
Space Invaders
Oh man, did anyone play that dual screened space game at the arcade? It had some joysticks and shit and a big warp button.

Not but I love joysticks and buttons so it sounds fun!!

I am old, but I was talking about the genre. A lot of the games I've listed were released in the past couple of years, and can be downloaded from BigFishGames.
Time Crisis, D&D, Street Fighter and Simpsons are all far to complicated and involved for the arcade genre.

. . . please define "arcade" in terms not involving "a game that was designed primarily with an arcade experience in mind".
Arcade genre
Arcade games often have very short levels, simple, easy to grasp controllers, iconic characters, and rapidly increasing difficulty. They are designed as quick bursts of adrenaline-fueled thrills, as opposed to most console games, which feature more in-depth gameplay, and stronger storylines. This is due to being coin-operated, where the player is essentially renting the game for as long as their game avatar can stay alive (or until they run out of tokens). Games on consoles or PCs can be referred to as an "arcade game" if it shares these qualities, or if it's a direct port of an arcade title.

I'd say that a brawler like Dungeons and Dragons arcade or a score-attack shooter like Time Crisis definitely count.
In Kentona's definition of Arcade games, then I'd say...
Probably just Asteroids. The rest were games I'd play for about 5 minutes before losing interest. Asteroids was best at keeping my attention, if for anything just to blow shit up.
I also completely forgot about the D&D arcade game. I only saw it once or twice in actual machine form so I never got the complete experience until much later. The best of its genre that I've played.

Yes, i fully agree with you on this kentona but more and more of these type of arcade games are coming out now and soon games like asteroids and such will be a thing of the past. The other day i took my friends son to the arcade which was absolutely huge and the only real arcade games i could find were pacman and tetris. The rest were simpsons, street fighter, Final Fantasy, Harry Potter etc. Christ, they may as well call the arcade a brand new console system.
METAL SLUG
I'm fairly sure this was released onto an arcade platform. The only game I know of where you can turn into a zombie and vomit orange acid on people for points.
Does Battle City count as a arcade game?

Metal Slug is an arcade series. Every Metal Slug game is a port from arcades with one or two exceptions (I think the newest one is console-specific and there was a Metal Slug somewhere that was a remake of 2 or something).
Never heard of this game but if you can vomit orange acid on people than i just might have to play it.
1. Contra Series
2. Tetris
3. Metal Slug
4. Street Fighter 2
5. Ikuruga
6. Battle Toads
7. Marvel VS Capcom 2
8. Time Crisis
9. House of the Dead
10. Tekken Tag Tournament
Tekken Tag Tourney is not a good fighting game IMO, but my friend used to force me to play it with him everytime we went to the movies, loved it when he kept calling me a cheap faggot everytime we went to the car.

10. Rampage
9. Addam's Family Pinball (essays have been written by pioneers in pinball design and manufacturing explaining why this is the best pinball machine ever made, and I absolutely agree. I spent hundreds of dollars on this pinball when I was a kid.)
8. Gauntlet
7. Pac-Man
6. Lethal Enforcers (From the name to the opening title sequence to what the story was about. Nobody could mistake this game for anything but a love letter to Dirty Harry.)
5. NBA Jam (HE'S ON FIRE!!! The only sports game I ever really liked...except for some skateboarding games, but I never really went nuts over them.)
4. The Simpsons
3. Street Fighter II
2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
1. Mortal Kombat II (I say II instead of the first because II introduced my favorite characters.)
