Hello there everyone! New guy around, hopefully you won't mind!

A special hello to the ladies, of course! ;) (What? I'm Irvine Kinneas after all! LOL)

Anyway, don't know if I'll stay for a while or not, I never really made a RPGmaker game project at all. I do have a general idea for a new project, but that's always the thing with me: I have one great general idea but am never able to figure out every details to make it go throught smoothly. Anyway, we'll see how it goes!

Anyway, having a few questions, if you don't mind. Firstly, which RPGmaker thing should I use? There's like 4 of them (2000, 2003, XP and VX). It's not a question of understanding the Event system and all, I'm pretty familiar with the 2003 one, actually, and it seems to be the one with the most games, on this website, but that might just be because it's one of the oldest, compared to XP and VX. Plus, it's not like the website offer a paid version for that one anymore, so I have no choice but to get a free version if I want to use that one, and... well, isn't that illegal? Even when the website doesn't sell it anymore? (weird system, honestly, but whatever! lol).

And my second question: Is this website offer a section where people can put their original RTP, and all? Just wondering: I kinda plan to use the least amount of not-already-included RTP as possible, for the sake of it, but if I ever need some, it'll be good to know they exist.

Anyway, thanks for the answers, if you bother reading all this, and nice to meet you all! (Again, especcially the ladies! haha ;) )

Are there really more RPGmakers? This is a RM VX only community. Buy it and you're the coolest person in here.
This is a VX-only community? But, there's, like, 44 pages of RPGmaker2003 games, while 25 pages of VX!?

Still, I believe you! Might at least give it a shot, or something!

Having a question, then: Do VX uses similar Events function as 2003? With the whole Switch and Variables things, for exemple? Just asking, 'cause I've heard VX is more user-friendly than others, which is all good if you're starting, but if you are used to a specific system, it might prove problematic to switch...
Welcome to RMN! And no, this is not a VX-only community, treeghost just happens to be a troll, don't mind him.

I really don't know. But it should work. Menus and other systems which you use more often in your game are easier to make with the prog. language (RGSS/Ruby) that the RPGmaker XP/VX support. But if you really want the old school feeling of an SNES/NES/C64 RPG, try the older RPGmakers.

RMVX is probably a good place to start as any! It is very similar to RM2k3 but with the added flexibility of scripts (and non-illegalness).

As for resources, we only have a single topic in the Help & Requests called The Resource Museum. There are currently no plans to implement a resource hosting system here at RMN. Your other option is to make a topic in the Artistic License & Literature forum (if your work is custom!). Some other people have done that.

Welcome to RMN! Contribute lots!
Welcome in! Yes, ever since the grand and not so pretty collapse of Gamingw of fame, this is probably the next best thing. Maybe. So take a seat, look arround and have your heart broken, because we are it, the last real organized game making site.
You mean the last English organized gaming site, don't you? I actually know of at least one pretty good French website about RPGmaking! The advantages of being bilingual, I guess! ^_^

Anyway, thanks for the welcome, and thanks for the advices! I'll probably at least try the demo version for VX, see what it looks like and all, then decide which one I prefer!

Thanks again everyone, and see you around! :)

D8 Hi.

Nice to see another FF8 fan around here :>

Enjoy your stay at RMN XD
Thank you, Sorceress! Although, as a SeeD, I'm supposed to beat you up, right? LOL ^_^

Anyway, just to let you know, I gave a try to the trial version of VX and am a little bit disappointed. I understand very well that it's more user-friendly, and I'll give them a points for graphics, map-creation and charsets. On this end, they did great!

However, when it comes to the event system, I'm slightly disappointed. There is least event options, for starting, and in the Conditions for an Event to occur, for the variables, you're stuck with ''above''... What if I want things to happen when variable is ''below''? Well, I guess I could always but that specific condition in the Event programming instead, but still, 'was much easier to just set it in the Event Condition... I already had issues with that with the Switch condition always set on ''ON''...

Anyway, sorry for the rant so early, just giving my 2 cents! Put shortly, I'm probably gonna stick with 2003 for the time being. Too bad I can't have VX's map creation and charsets combined with 2003's Event system (or can I? At least the Charsets? ^_^ )

See ya guys! :) Thanks again for the welcoming!
Irvine: You can use a conditional branch to make the variable activate the scene. You can set the else to do nothing.

For example, I want my character, Rob, to say something when his Stamina is less than or equal to 10. If his stamina is greater than 10 nothing happens.

@>Conditional Branch: Variable <= 10
@>Text: 'Rob_face', 0, Normal, Bottom
: : Character:
: : Ugh...I'm kinda tired.
@>
: Else
@>
: Branch End
@>

In this way you can also set conditions for when a Switch is off. Don't give up on the event system just yet! I didn't really like the event system myself until I started playing around with it. Just try breaking it in and seeing what you can do with it.
FINAL EDIT: I fixed it... It was extremely weird, but it got fixed in the end... Sorry for the ranting before and all... But I'm figuring things out!
