WHAT'S THE POINT?

Lately, I've been wondering, what's the point in mastering a program like RPG Maker 2003, and creating some games with it?

To me, there really doesn't seem to be one. Every time I ask myself what the point is of me pouring hours on end into some specialized software, to make a game, that wouldn't stick out any more than anyone else on this entire site, I keep coming to the conclusion that there isn't a point, and it's a genuine waste of time.

So, why do you guys do it?

I mostly do it for myself. I have a 4 year old kid who started getting addicted to playing my latest project. When he gets old enough to really get into my games, he's gonna think it's the coolest thing in the world, what I've done. It's just cool to have all this art that I make and someday when I'm much older, I'll look back at everything I've created and just SMILE. I'll be replaying my Under World games until the day I die, because it's simple...I'm just damn proud of what I do.

You should be as well!

You do it for yourself, and at the same time, you do it for others.

This really sums up, very well, how I feel about it all.
I love zombies, so I make a zombie game.
The fact that I can share it with others who also like zombies is just badass.

There really is only one sure-fire way to answer this: Because we love doing what we do.

What is the point of anything? You're just going to die and most likely not be remembered. Just keep doing nothing until you die and disintegrate into dirt.

Haha, this.

What spurs me on is this thought: a year or two down the line, you've got people arguing over the RM equivalent of Justin Bieber:

<<Tales of Magic Fantasy Youtube video>>
CloudSquall1: ROFLLMAOthisrules!!!
AynRand066: No it doesn't, you dumb fuck. Why does no one care about the REAL games? Stuff like A Blurred Line and Character? Why's it all TALES OF this and FINAL TEAR 3 that? God, I hate society.
CloudSquall1: lolwtf
AynRand066: Philistine. Go back to your herd, you fucking sheep. At least I know where the real talent's at.
CloudSquall1: dickfaec

Basically I want to make a cult classic.

...only half kidding.
I do it for the makerscore.
your question is too broad and applicable to all aspects of everything to a certain degree. why make games at all? why PLAY games? why play? why live? why exist? Life is arbitrary and inherently meaningless.

the meaning is what you make of it! satisfaction, enjoyment, etc.
I do it for the fame.

I like people playing and talking about stuff I make, that's all.

I use rm2k3 cause it's easier to use. I don't know if the engine was specified in the first post because the frustration has something to do with it, or it's just about amateur game making in general.
Basically, if I'm bored as shit, got time to spare, and don't feel like doing any *real* work, I'll work on RM project. It's fun + I'm still using the creative portion of my brain, so that's why I do it.
Why do people paint landscapes?
Why do people write poetry?
Why do people try to invent anything of any kind?

Story telling has always been an art. Only recently, in the last 30 years or so, has video game design joined as a medium. Like all new things, only the well off and able (organized companies with investors) could do it. Now, anybody can.

In the future, I see video game design as less of a commercial product and more of a collaborative art.

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

I do really like the feeling I get when something I created gives other people happiness or fun. But, I think much more importantly, I like the feeling I get when something I created is good. Game design is something I like to think I have some degree of skill at, and I'm always trying to get better. My goal is to create the best possible game, and that's far more important to me than whether anyone else plays it.

People seem to have a lot of different things that motivate them. It's interesting to read them all.
Kills time. I can't be productive 100% of the time, so I need hobbies.
I love it. When I'm not working on something with RPG Maker, or writing... I'm just bored all of the time. There may be work and friends, but those things aren't EVERY DAY (well, work is, but sitll...)

Also, I hardly find myself actually PLAYING commercial games these days. I just don't feel as though I'm doing something productive. However when I make games, I DO feel like I'm being productive with my time in creating something, so I think it's a great pass-time for that reason alone. And people play them! Which is even better.
Wow. The topic starter is REALLY something. That's like me saying "Why bother posting this here man?"

For me. I make games to train myself for the big deal-- either by being a game designer or just a character designer. Also, I want to make my creations ALIVE and scream to the world that "IT'S ALIIIIIIVVEEEE!!!!".

Don't pity yourself into thinking that your games are worthless, because nothing you make is worthless if you put your heart into it.

Here's a question: what's the point of replying to your topic?

I make games because I make games. That's all the explanation you need. That's all anyone should need.

Questioning existence isn't a discussion you want to get into bud.

It's a good way to practice game design without having to learn/master a programming language or high-end art creation (or without needing a team to do it for you). It allows you to jump right into designing games with the lowest learning curve (without being limiting - RM can still make great games).

For someone like me, who is trying to become a game designer professionally, it was a good way to practice before I started learning more advanced tools. Today, I'm using an engine called Unity3D, which is quickly becoming accepted among the professional world, but all of the tips and tricks of game design I learned while using RPG Maker still apply. Plus, despite that fact that RM is 2d and Unity is 3d, you'd be surprised how similar the engine/workflow/feel of design is.

Edit: also it's fun/for the bitches/for the fame
I'm actually waiting for the guy who made the fist post to say something.
