TITLE MUSIC

I know this is a weird topic, and probably utterly useless, but I'm just curious about people's thoughts on this (if anyone has ever given this some thought).

People usually try to pick a cool song for their title screen. A cool image and a cool song. But I'm thinking normal people don't stay long staring at title screens, or listening to their tunes... especially on games with a static title screen (like most of them are).

So... is there a point in picking a cool song?
Do you guys try to reuse the song in the game to make it worth it importing the file?
Do you guys try to choose a song that has a cool beginning (first few seconds), since it's the only part players are ever gonna hear?
Cool beginning is the way to go. Sometimes I can chill on the title screen for a moment to hear how the song goes on, at least the first time I play a game.
I don't have much to add to the topic but... I kind of hate default RM title screens. If something was actually happening the music might have more purpose. Otherwise you are just looking at a simple splash screen, whatever, continue, load save file.

my favourite title screen from a videyo game btw. The ingame footage or w/e makes the music a lot more worthwhile.
Well, I don't hate default title screens. They're practical. Being a new/load/quite splashscreen is not really... a flaw. But it's not something worth staring at either (should it be?).
I've always just had the title music trail continue into the opening credits. It solves the short duration issue so I can find where the first seconds don't become unbearable when repeated.

I like having cool songs and cool images for my title screen, although I'm not sure what practical purpose they serve besides me staring at them thinking how cool they look and/or sound.

One of many areas in which VX gives you significantly more leeway.

Not really. http://cherrytree.at/cms/lang/en/download/?did=17
For as long as I sat and listened to it, this might as well have been static:

Of course, Baba Yetu is an outlier... I don't think the title slot is a waste of a song, but it's usually a waste of a long song. I probably wouldn't choose to use one that's longer than a minute. (Not looping it for preference, in that case.)
Baba Yetu isn't just title music, but goes with the intro video. It's also amazingly good.

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Reusing your title music in a climactic moment in the game can be extremely effective. When that music starts playing during the game, I definitely notice. It makes me think, "This is an important and central scene. This is what the game is about."

In my game, the title music is the main character's theme. Which plays, I believe, three times during the actual game. When he's first introduced at the beginning of the game, in act two during a key moment in a war when he rejoins the party after forsaking them, and during the final boss fight. The version of the song played during the final boss is remixed to an extent.
Baba Yetu is the king of video game music.

Back in the SNES days I always watched the title the first time I played a game. It got me pumped and interested if it was well done. Here's the top dog of SNES RPG intros: Kick ass music and highlight scenes from the game. Here's another nice one. Games need to put a lick of effort into the title screen. One apt comparison is fantasy book covers: The trash are the most horribly generic pieces of shit where you could swap out the cover with other books and not notice a difference. Then others that actually care put interesting and relevant stuff on the covers to help set the mood of the book. Sure the contents between the covers are the same but it's no excuse to put that extra polish in especially when it is something every player will see.

Cool titles has always been one of my disappointments with XP/VX (and now 2k3 too) where people photoshop some stuff together and call it the day and maybe move a box around.

Terranigma comes to mind.
You really just need nine seconds of awesomeness. Like this game:

Interesting topic, calunio; I was just browsing through my songs looking for a song that would quickly and immediately begin to explain my games depth.

A song should always be worth the players time, imo; I know there use to be a thread on here where the games were played for like 10 - 15 minutes and then would be scored off of that (think its been locked now.. :/ ) and the one thing that was done at the beginning of each game play/review was listen to the title screens music. The song should grab the player immediately imo, but its just so hard to do that sometimes... :/

They say not to judge a book by its cover. I guess people do anyways.

Which is why the creation of book covers is an entire industry.

It is completely the same with games and screenshots here. Especially here, but in the video game world at large. As a matter of fact I can think of a few people who I think of more as purveyors of screenshots than actual game creators. It's an interesting mutagenic social phenomena.
So... is there a point in picking a cool song? yes! it sets the tone for the game

Do you guys try to choose a song that has a cool beginning (first few seconds), since it's the only part players are ever gonna hear? yes! because that is the part that everyone will hear (and hopefully hear over and over again, as they continue to play and replay your game)

In Aorta I'm using the best part of a longer in-game song as the title music which means I have 2 files imported: the whole version and that specific part of it. But I don't think it's the most awesome song in the game.

Right.

I hate animated custom title screens though, because the interface always reacts way too slowly, also it sucks when I press F12 and I have to wait for shit again.
