Anyway for mine it depends a lot, sometimes I use drawings I made (like this one) or fnny pictures, or just some random eye candy.

I have this one cuz Recettear is awesome. I try not to vary the avatars too much but I do tend to use a drawing of one of my characters or a character from a game I like.

Yes, and it's somewhat misleading, adressing posts to photos, paintings or pictures of girls or women, and knowing they're in fact avatars of men!

Mine could easily be the worst avatar around here. I just scribbled it up in 2 minutes because though my pixeling abilities are terrible I don't like seeing avatar-less names. Its like looking at a random shadow in a crowd of people if you know what I mean >.<
I only use an avatar so I can eyeball my posts more rapidly. I made these pixels like seven years ago for a game that was never completed.
There i think i'm approching the perfect avatar!(for me.)

Actually i was looking at paintings from Miro in particular and suddenly, this thing came up from i don't know where (hard to beleive Miro made it) and i jumped on it! and right also(the default avatar for any site) but not quite, it does represent a face and sites choose something infinitely more neutral : a blank space, or the egg for twitter

The face is still infinitely neutral compared to facebook's boy/girl-next-door silhouettes. Most websites will try to be unique though and won't use the same default avatar as another.
