WHAT HAPPENED LAST NIGHT
Posts
I'd say this is pretty fair, as democracy goes, on a rpgmaker site (for rscholbert), i'd also say i've seen much much worse as negativity goes (that's for the "bande à Bonnot"?!), i've also never seen such an active site (games, articles, tutorials, etc.), finally i've rarely seen such average level of quality in games, so what i feel is a fair overall comment is : cheers, for rmn! its really a worthwhile site.
And i' not writing this to be nilly-nally (or whatever the expression), no, i'm writing this in earnest

I agree. To be honest, I don't know why some members act as if this website is so terrible now and merely a shell of its former self. I liked then, and I like it now.
Buuuut you know what they say about opinions...
I actually do not care about whatever happened - as far as I'm concerned, most (not all) of the peoples posts I enjoy are banned and people like s4d are allowed to post. That is all I know and all I care about. And I don't like it.
Pet peeve; I wish people would saying 'all of the people I like are banned', for better or worse, it was like, two people. If you only liked two people out of this entire community, then sheesh, man.
I must say, I really appreciated Magi's posts for whatever reason, I felt somehow comforted, it was almost like i liked her..............? it may seem absurd considering i have no idea who the person is, but that's how I felt! and for that reason, I was really pissed! that she (he?), of all people, would get banned!
Whatever that means!
Whatever that means!

Yeah, this.
Past few months, I've grown really to respect Feldschlacht's posts, and everytime I see them I say to myself "This is going to be chalk full of wisdom and awesomeness"
Overall though, I don't really look forward to peoples posts(definitely not the reason I'm here to begin with), as sometimes they are never really consistent.

What happened last night was between you and me and if you tell anyone I will come to your house and cut you.

well, alright, the rest left by their own accord. the point is that there's ALOT of cool people missing.
Regarding what happened “last night” I can summarize how I feel by just saying: *shrug* I can live with it.

I’m not happy with the ‘deleted’ posts but they weren’t too many nor too important as far as I know. (I did see a couple of them) And the whole thing was nowhere near “Rampant censorship” as Ciel puts it. So an “It was a mistake on my part to do so. I won't delete any more posts” from Holbert is enough for me.
Magi’s ban was maybe a bit too much, especially if the main punishment for his transgressions was to have him removed from the staff. Now, is not that I’m a fan of any of the ‘shmup’ guys, but as abrasive as they can be, Magi was among the tamest, I think. I wouldn’t mind if he’s unbanned after some time.
Strangeluv on the other hand would never drop his act and he used to cause too much trouble around. He can stay out for all I care... I don’t know if bans are absolute though. I think banned people should still be able to manage their games somewhat. With the mod’s approbation for any action taken, that is.
I don’t really want anyone else of ‘them’ to be banned, but I kinda agree with WIP about what he said to Ciel. His attitude just doesn’t have a place in this site. I find his usual “The staff is incompetent, the games are mediocre, and the users are ignorant” drivel to be just pathetic. I wish he used all that ‘passion’ to write reviews, or to actually help people improve their games, but noooo. So basically I’m just waiting for him to go.
As for the people who left, well, the way I see it they were already weary of this site and just saw a chance to get out. That’s fine, they’re adults and know what they’re doing, so I don’t really mind them. I’m sure they’ll remain friends to whomever they were friends with. Most probably they’ll continue their games and we’ll be able to enjoy them when they come out. And besides, they can always come back if they want.
To all the (disgruntled) friends and supporters of the affected ones. You’d better watch the path you’re walking if you don’t want to become the old, cynical userbase of tomorrow. Think what’s more important here, some misplaced sense of loyalty or everything else this site has to offer. This place is unique, and even when things aren’t always how we want them, there are proper ways to work towards its improvement.
And to the rest of us who think this whole ordeal could have been handled differently. We must try our best to ensure this unfortunate scenario never repeats itself. That of course includes a better attitude from the staff towards open discussion. Which I think is why this thread was created, so I’m glad for that.

I have yet to understand any of this behavior whatsoever. You all aren't political activists overthrowing tyrannical overlords of terror to create a free country to express anything and everything you want along with returning stolen power back to the people so it can be run in a more effective, diverse manner.
This is simply a website. A website where you post games and talk to each other simply as a hobby in your free time that hardly has an effect on your life aside from the fact of it being a hobby that you spend your free time on because you enjoy it. Nothing more. Nothing less.
Fucking hell guys.

I thought we were old war buddies. *smokes chapset cigar*

Actually, YDS and Ocean are the tamest, and VideoWizard. By the way, why VIDEO WIZARD, of all people joined Shmup is completely beyond me.
I am tempted to post a lengthy 'what I think about shmup' manifesto but I know they will laugh at it and dissect it line by line in their IRC channel, repasting the same one-line quotes from it into the channel like five times in a row and doing that again and again over the course of day after day. I've seen them do it, and having been on that end of the process I have no desire to be on this end of it.
Here's the short list (believe it or not), leaving out grievances about things that individual members of shmup have done to me that were really fucked up because as they frequently argue they don't all want to be held accountable for each others' actions.
Things I Agree With Shmup About
* Featuring 'Sonic and the Chaos Dragons' as a prank is kind of hilarious, and not any more harmful to RMN than, say...allowing 'Sonic and the Chaos Dragons' to be hosted on the site in the first place. I mean, if the maker of Sonic and the Chaos Dragons was posting new screens and blogs EVERY DAY, then it would ALWAYS be on the front page, and there would be nothing we could do about it. Compared to things that were done to me in the olden days, this would have been much easier for kentona et al. to have a sense of humor about.
* Censorship is ALWAYS bad.
Things I Disagree With Smup About
* Rampant, frothing hatred of RPG Maker VX and everything made in it. 'Bigotry' is obviously a silly word to use when talking about computer gams, but it is probably the best word to describe #shmup's posture towards VX. Guys, VX and 2k3 are equally capable of making good games and crap games. Shmup totally refuses to acknowledge any possibility that the reason they think all VX games being released today are crap and that all 2k3 games from the old days were better is because a) in the old days they were five years younger and easier to impress and b) they are looking at the old-days through the rose tinted glasses of hindsight. There is nothing inherently worse about VX as an engine or about the products made with it. If anything about the game making culture of 2011 is fostering the creation of 'crap games' it can't be blamed on VX.
* Perpetually unspoken but nonetheless omnipresent assumption that graphics are always and only the most important thing about game design. Shmup would deny this to the death but it permeates their culture.
* always being mean and/or sarcastic to everyone you dislike all the time is not a good way to 'agitate for social change' or w/e. if like /b/ you're just in it for the lulz, then don't pretend to some higher mission. you can't be a total dick 100% of the time and still take the stance of 'we are the good guys', guys.
* That I am a stupid piece of shit and everything I've ever made sucks. (Duh.)
That said, ironically this entire incident made me much more sympathetic toward the entire culture and attitude of shmup than I had ever been before. I still think it's probably a good thing they quit/were banned en masse. RMN is not for them, and they are not for RMN. There was a fundamental attitude incompatibility and there's no denying that.
alterego and Natook are awesome. :)
