If done right, it passes that sensation of... Hmm... think in terror movies
You finally exorcised the demon in the house
You try to leave the house, ask the keys to the house maid or something
Then she isn't there
There is a speech, and she turns out to be even creepier and more evil than the original exorcised being
Maybe she was projecting it
It is very, very cliche (especially in terror movies) but it works! And it works WONDERS!
Think: "Oh! Finally, he is beaten! My character's cute, little sister won't die! She's safe! SAFE!*"
Then ou come back to the town, a generally stoic, nice character appears to have killed her himself. Suddenly, "it all makes sense".
And you get the hell creeped out of yourself. Especially nice for bad, canon endings ♥

Here's an idea, how about we switch it where you playing a villain, and the two antagonist that your talking about, are actually protagonists and are still working against/together. Like, hate, who knows, just an idea.
"Ha ha, I finally found you all my life, it's time that I shown you the truth"
defeats bad guy after hero finds about the truth about himself, and why bad guy was after him.
But suddenly out of nowhere, a much sinister looking guy/girl villian appears, announces his/herself as the main villian/ess and kills the bad guy you thought was the real bad guy. Something like that.
