TARGETING SYSTEM IN THE DBS?

I have a skill that needs to active a Switch and I was wondering if there was a way to define a target for the skill using Pictures, Input Key Processing, and Variables , as opposed to Message: Choose a Target, Show Choices: Char 1, Char 2, Char 3.

I don't need a tutorial, just a general idea of what to do. Even an example from a game works. Thanks for any help.
What maker? If it's 2K/3, you're out luck. There's no great way to find out what monsters are active on the field and you'd have to make a new one for every monster party.

And the skill is supposed to target an ally. Is there no way to do so even using a preset (and unchanging) party?
Hmm couldn't you make it a non switch skill and detect it by the sp used on the hero (this sp use will have to be unique), then make the skill do something small like up a party members def by 1 or something and detect which party member got it based on the def compared to the previous turn's def? I have not done battle events in a lonnnnggg time but this is the best I can think of.
