SUPER MARIO BROS. 2 (USA)
Posts
I was playing this game today, and was wondering: "Does this really count as a Mario game?"
Post thoughts.

Yes and no. No in the fact its really a different game with Mario paint on it. Yes in the fact that all the enemies and gameplay have been used in other games.
It's actually a game called Doki Doki Panic. The mechanics may be considerably different, but a lot of Mario staples were introduced in the game, from player characters to monsters. It has its place in Mario history for that reason, but I'd consider it like LOZ 2 and Final Fantasy 2 - a vastly different beast that's well designed, but different.

I know about Doki Doki. They made another Super Mario Bros. 2 in Japan, but it was two hard for us fat, lazy Americans.
Its not that we're fat and lazy... we are... but mario is a kid's game. Anyone ever play Lost Levels? I love it, but even at my old age its still tough, painfully tough. Which painfully tough stuff seems to be making a comeback in indie games.
However, 5 year olds playing Lost Levels is just too hard.
Also I think the whole Doki Doki and Legend of Zelda 2 fucked up what people percieve as sequils. People complain about Doom 1 to Doom 2 and Left for Dead 1 and Left for Dead 2 being more of a 1.5 and less of a sequil, because not enough changed. Whereas with Doki Doki and Zelda 2 everything changed.

Let's just say that in my opinion, Super Mario Bros. 3 won the series hands down.
Wasn't that game not made by Nintendo.

It was also a piece of crap.
Unlike most sequels that evolve on the original or transform completely, Lost Levels was like an expansion pack. It used the exact same engine and graphics. Did it introduce a single new thing besides that damn poison shroom?
The mighty titan that is Super Mario Bros deserved more than that, and I think a Doki Doki remix was the right decision.
I like Lost Levels. : (
And I hated Mario 2.
Because one is a Mario game, and the other fucking isn't.
For me, Mario games are side-scrolling 2D platformers where you dispatch enemies primarily by landing on their heads. Anything outside of this box is a vile betrayal. That goes for Mario Is Missing, SMB 2, Mario 64, Super Mario Galaxy, and everything else that isn't exactly what I described.
/nerdrage.
EDIT:
By the way this should be in video games. If only I was a moderator, it already would be. : )

That is an extremely narrow minded and self depriving view that does nothing for you but rob you of a potentially fun time.

Damn straight. It's like I said about the Resident Evil thing in another topic. Games will evolve over time, and YES their going to (gasp!) change.
Just because it's different in some aspects isn't going to make any less of an enjoyable game.

But seriously, Mario 2 rocked.
I don't get it. Are we talking about the 1988 nes game? That game is the "one of these things" that's "not like the other" when compared to the one before and after it but it's still pretty similar especially when compared to games outside the series. So it makes me wonder if I'm missing the point and the game in question is some other game...
I mean, why wouldn't it count?
btw. paper mario sucked balls.

I don't really like Super Mario Bros. 2 because for me, the playablity felt kind of uncomfortable, and I really hated how you threw stuff in a "diagonal" direction, and it was hard for me to hit some guys sometimes.
Keep in mind that I am not standing up for The "Lost Levels". I can barely pass the second round because it's so hard. It didn't really add anything new to the series other than slightly revamped graphics and the evil poison mushroom. I also believe the game wasn't released due to a marketing reason morso than the difficulty. It was so similar to the first game that it wouldn't draw people's attention.
I respectfully disagree. I have that game on the VC and it's still fun to this day.

Well, when I played it, I just had a tough time enjoying myself. It seemed so dialogue heavy and so boring.
I just re-watched the intro and prologue on youtube. I think it's something like 15 minutes of really bad text before you even begin. Then, the gameplay just wasn't that exciting. I ended up quitting within another 15 minutes.
I did like Super Mario Bros. Wii though.
