NEW RPG ENGINE/PLATFORM - HELP NEEDED

Posts

Hi,

I work as a computer programmer in the insurance industry and am also currently involved in several game design projects. Most of my work in game design is networking/socket related.

I've been building a new 2d RPG editor which includes custom graphics, sound, networking and scripting components.

Here are some of the highlights.
- It will be free
- Editor will be web based
- Concept of team projects(project files could be stored on server and shared)
- Multiplayer component(Mostly Finished)
- Python and Ruby scripting
- Modable (Advanced developers can build plugins for editor)

I require some assistance in designing the scripting engine and object model. I would be doing all the programming myself but I need some advanced scripters to provide feedback and to tell me what works and what doesn't. Anyone who isn't a scripter is free to contact me with suggestions as well.

Thanks,
Rob

Eew. Web based.
I made one of these years ago no one wanted web based. There are other web based / browser RPG makers too.

Stencil is Flash.

Hi Adon, can you explain what you don't like about web based editors?

Can you send me a link to stencil? I can't seem to find it in google.

I am still not convinced that there are any quality web editors out there at the moment. I've been searching for a such a product for years and still haven't found one.

Stencyl, if you are looking for it on Google.

That is, before or after HTML 5? Some web tools can look like modern day, and work as fast as modern day tools. Though I haven't seen any myself, HTML 5 supposedly allows for great grand features.

@ prexus:
Stencil if you're curious. (What I'm trying to say is, how can he find Stencyl on google if he typed in stencil?)

Hi, what I hate about web bases editors is A, they are web based, what if I am without the I-net for two weeks?(Which I will be sometime soon... D:) and B, they are usually really crappy in structure, and they are limited, and C, RPGMAKER usually stomps the crap out of them, and D, what if the website or whatever gets intruded? Or data on the site gets lost? Though yours can be a totally different case, this is a common tendency among them.(At least in my opinion, which is everything but professional.)

I don't think most people here even understand what half these features mean. No one wants web based, and no one cares what it was made with. They only care that it works, it does what they need to (make RPGs) and it just works.

You will have to create a 2D RPG editor fast, it would need the fewest number of best features to be simple and powerful otherwise it will go with the mountain of forgotten RPG editor attempts.
I appreciate everyone's feedback/criticism it is very helpful.

I'm not too worried about it becoming a failed attempt. It is intended to be free anyway and originally I got the idea because I wanted to continue making 2d RPGs and put them in the browser. So I figured I would make something free and public for everyone. I have been working on it part time for over a year now, and will continue working on it until I get it finished.

Like I said I am doing all the programming but the problem is that I need to ensure that the scripting components are easy to understand. I could create the most amazing scripting API but if it is confusing it won't matter. This is why I am looking for some experienced scripters just to bounce some idea back and forth.

I do also have a working map editor that I built in January that will eventually need a lot of feedback, but for now my focus is on scripting.

Most of those can easily be resolved. Even though the editor is focused on being browser based it is easy enough to make it run offline. The "crappy" structure issue is what I am trying to resolve here by getting good suggestions. With regards to data loss I would definitely allow people to save or backup files locally. I wouldn't restrict files to just the server. The whole idea is to create an open solution and not to lock people down or create restrictions.

Anyway even if you don't want to help out with scripting feel free leave more suggestions/criticism here. Negative feedback is the best kind :).
Web based = no is really the big one here. Some of us hate clouds.
Fair enough. I started out with RPG Maker as well, and I always wanted a way to get my games into browser. I guess I am just different in that regard.

I will probably just let this post die off then since it doesn't seem to be attracting much interest. I might come back at a later point with a link to the sample editor for more feedback.

My offer to scripters still stands though, anyone interested just drop me a PM.

You could always make it where it connects online, instead of it being directly on a browser. So people can collaborate together on it, share games and such and chat, without having to open up the net. Hell even being able to play other's games as a tester via online function could do, as well.

@Thiamor : wow those are some kind of fantastic ideas!
@centrifugal It is a interesting idea, I mean i can see the possible benefits of storing games on a server. I mean if you can access the files via a login, a team can easily work on them. Although I don't know how it will work if they both log on and edit it at the same time. Though it might be easier then trying to catch each other online to swap files or upload to a site like megaupload every time something gets updated. But I really like the idea of the offline option and storing files locally, be good for backups in case of server crash. But maybe also give it the option to play/test play the games offline as well, instead of restricting it to web-based only. It doesn't sound like a totally bad idea, if executed right I think it may work if done right. Good luck on it though, I will be interested in checking it out when its ready though. so feel free to pm me a link. :)
@jc984 Thanks for the feedback.

My old site is currently offline at the moment as I am paying a design company to rebrand/redesign it.I will send you a link when I have working version of the application uploaded.

Just to respond to some of your points.

1. Multiple people working on same files.

In my proof of concept application I built last year I had built in a source control mechanism. So when one team member is editing a file it becomes locked, until it is released/saved. This also keeps a history of all previous versions so that it can be rolled back at any point. For instance maybe a team member decides to be destructive and ruin maps/scripts. Only the team admin can control version history.

2. Backup files locally

I don't have any backup functionality built yet, I am still thinking about the best way to implement it. Your post has given me an idea though. As part of the source control process it could store a local copy of all files. This way if someone closes their browser unexpectedly it may still be able to recover some of the changes.

Side note....
I've also just added a C++ programmer and 3d Modeller/Animator to my team. I have no plans on adding 3d unfortunately but it will be interesting to see what he can do.

Both jobs involve programming? In fact I think it makes me more qualified in some ways because I have had exposure to so many different technologies.

Not that it even matters because the purpose of that comment wasn't to create a correlation, it was to just give a brief description of myself and previous work. Rather than saying "I am building an editor but I can't program, script or do graphics".

If you are going to dig up a post after 5 days at least say something intelligent. Do you even know what a cloud is? Probably not. Come back one day when you're not 12 and say something constructive.

Or you come back when you have respect for people who've been on longer than you *longer in the sense of joining first, in this case* and not go all troll happy on them for saying something that you deem as non-intelligent. Now, if you're gonna come on here and talk about making an editor, by all means go for it. But don't talk like you're better when someone says something that you don't like. We all can make your stay so much harder if you're trying to be a douche about it.

Being here longer(or first) doesn't give you the right to troll or be a douchebag first. TeyGuy brought up an old topic and said something completely irrelevant to it. Please correct me if I am wrong, but isn't that what trolling is? And I am sorry saying shit like "We all can make your stay so much harder if you're trying to be a douche about it." is being just as bad as he is, if not worse. Lets lose the insults and shit people and try to be more respective towards each other instead of acting like 12 year old's. If they are acting like a douchebag, then try to take the high road and ignore them instead of adding to the childishness. This is supposed to be a supportive community to help each other out and play some "l33t" games, least how I see it. Well that was my two sense. *raises flame shields to maximum* :)

I know he was trolling, but when people bring up intelligence as some type of come back, to me that is even worse. Also I didn't mean we, just myself in sense of making it harder. But not by trolling. I don't really troll people. I just am brutally honest, is it.
