DO YOU KILL BUGS?
Posts
This topic is inspired by the life of the spider I just killed. I wanted to know what you guys thought of this, which I assume is very little. Do you kill bugs? If you do it, do you give it any thought? If you don't, why don't you? Is it an act you are completely indifferent to? Oh please, do tell.
Usually I kill them when I think they're potentially annoying, distracting or dangerous. I never kill them "just because".
I do give it a lot of thought, though. Sometimes I feel bad for killing them. And sometimes, when I'm more patient, I try to remove them from wherever I'm at, instead of killing them.
What comforts me is knowing that insects don't live much. Though I just made a quick research that proved me wrong. Ants may live up to a full year. Though a typical butterfly only lives for 2 weeks or so.

Killing spiders and ants doesn't bother me. I figure there's enough room outside for them not to come inside. However... moths or any other harmless insect I just throw outside.
I kill them depending on size. Mosquitoes I always kill, going on murderous mosquite killing sprees occasionally. Flies I kill when I am carrying the right equipment (a rolled up newspaper), otherwise I can show mercy towards them and just shoo them away. I never show any mercy towards horse-flies though. Those buggers all need to die in a fire.
Bees and wasps I try to avoid killing (mostly because they're resilient and I don't want to anger them).
I rarely see any point in killing ants or spiders. Though sometimes they invade my privacy too much and they'll have to go.

I don't kill bugs if I can avoid it. I keep a jar and a small piece of cardboard in my room so that I can easily scoop up any that wander inside and deposit them outside.
I certainly don't take any pleasure in killing any living thing.

I kill bugs.
I smoosh them when they are in my house. If there is a wasps nest in my yard, I kill it with fire (seriously! I grab a can of Raid and a blowtorch. Wasp stings hurt dammit, and I have a 2 year old)
I find ants fascinating, but I will still smoosh them. Moths - smooshed. Mosquitoes - smooshed with a vengence. Horseflies - hunted down and smooshed (those bites hurt!). Flies - smooshed unless it is easier to shoo them outside.
I do think about it, but I weigh their assassination against their invasion of my home. Not in my house!

I mostly only kill the ones indoors. That would be flies and spiders. I really hate flies since they're always in the way and then they will taste the flyswatter or the electric racket. Sometimes even with my BARE HANDS! I might also end some wasps with electrocution if I feel that I can take them down in one turn.
I have no remorse. It's like you'd feel for a random town NPC, which I don't.

I don't kill anything. I stopped like 2 years ago and haven't since.
If I see a spider or something that I want to get rid of I'll just get a cup and put it outside.

Yeah I don't tend to kill anything. I feel too bad afterwards.
Even huge spiders (by UK standards at least) I'll just catch in a pint glass and put outside/elsewhere.
Flying things I'll just wait until they're bouncing against a window trying to get out and then let them out.
One summer this flew into my room though, at first we thought it was a bat, turned out it was mothra:
(Not for people who're squeamish about bugs or large images.)
And yes, I set it loose outside after I took these pictures.

Any bug that annoys me will generally be fried (I'm armed with an electric flyswatter for extra attack bonus).
Wasps and flies are generally killed on sight if I have my weapon nearby.
Spiders aren't bugs though and they eat flies and stuff, so I normally don't kill them. If bothersome I simply move them, and sometimes I will feed them flies I kill.
I don't give it too much thought when I kill them, but enough to avoid stepping on them when I'm walking outside or to make them any trouble if they're just minding their own business (i.e. not flying in my face or constantly following me)

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Relevant:
I live in an area where, every spring/summer, the whole city gets infested with fishflies (I believe they are more commonly referred to as mayflies, but we call them fishflies around here.) The live only a few hours, mate, and then die. At night, you can see them congregating around light sources like street lights or even traffic lights, and in the morning, you'll just see piles of dead fishflies. They literally need to call out street sweepers to clean them up at the end of the season. It's pretty gross.
Anyway, on to the more relevant points, these things are so abundant they literally get everywhere. You can't open a door without one getting inside. And they're very docile during the day, so docile that you can literally just walk right up to one and grab it by the wings. When I was a little kid, I used to grab them and then pull their wings off just for fun. I realize now that this was a horrible thing to do and I still feel bad about it to this day, so now I never kill fishflies. I just grab them by the wings and toss them outside.
I murder the crap out of centipedes, though. I hate those guys.

Hmm. I don't really think of spiders and insects as animals that feel pain and deserve life, the way I think of other animals. If I squashed a chipmunk or pulled the wings off a blue jay, or even killed a pest like a mouse or a bat, I would feel at least a little bit bad for it. But bugs, I feel nothing. They are on the same level as bacteria to me.

Sorry Lockez in 90% sure insects and arachnids can feel pain, they just don't have an emotional reaction to pain and there's a difference between feeling pain and reacting emotionally to pain, I'm pretty sure they're quite closely related to crustacea (who also have exoskeletons) who I'm almost certain feel pain. I'm 99.9% certain that gastropods do (slugs, snails etc) as they're essentially mollusks. Pain is an almost completely necessary survival tool as it provides a stimulus to get away from things that are causing bodily damage and may cause you to die.
There's a huge difference between bacteria and an organism with a nervous system.

Yeah, I mentally know they are animals, but I still think of them as a lower life form for some reason. I don't have a sensible explanation. I am just selectively callous I guess.
I'm the same as Calunio and Kazesui. I only kill frustrating bugs like cockroaches (no remorse), flies and wasps and ants that keep hovering around the house and flooding the sugar bottle :|
I don't kill spiders even when they're as big as my hand since they eat stated bugs from above (I heard that it also eat cockroaches when that big '3')) and if others are in the way, I just scoop them with whatever I can use and set them outside.

I kill bugs only if it's necessary on the whole, I have a very particular affection for moth!
Problem : I have CATS and they instintively love to kill bugs, so : I don't want to interfere with their instincts, and I really hate it when they kill inoffensive bugs, I generally let my cats have it their way, but what a pleasure when I can save that moth when they're not around, let all those little lives go on!
